For the longest time we had hardcover books but soldiers needed entertainment that was easily transportable so we switched to paperback allowing soldiers to carry books with them Many books of the time were military themed Literacy spread with the increased availability Baby and Childcare ideas on child rearing Dr Benjamin Spock The baby boom occurred after WWII prompting Dr Spock to write a oral culture It was very difficult to share ideas when books required hand copying He was a new media pioneer and a true innovator Most people are familiar with his name through the Gutenberg bible He had a difficult time innovating lawsuits bankruptcy etc He developed a product before it s time Printing System Gutenberg contributed 3 things Software The ability to write in a standardized language that could be recorded in writing instead of being limited to oral communication only The Sumerians and Egyptians were the first to write down information through paintings and hieroglyphics The Impact of Writing Before writing was introduced cultures viewed people and their knowledge as inseparable Writing separated the person from their knowledge allowing the information to span space and time regardless if the person died The Greeks pushed writing with the production of the Iliad and Odyssey Also developed the scientific method and combined democracy with the importance of literacy Most importantly writing allowed knowledge to live after the knower Medium Paper came around in China after an emperor copied the way a wasp created it s nest tore rags apart to soak in water and make pulp that dried on a screen Unlike the ideas that were carved on temples this was increasingly transferable allowing for ideas to spread quickly with consistency of info The Chinese tried to keep This invention made printing information on paper easy and quick increasing availability He used resin and soap to make his ink so that it would stay printed on instead of washing away e readers what you read on specialized for reading books not multi purpose e books what you read formatted specifically for e readers One of the first projects to make books electronically available was Project
