Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 The Annotated Sheet A Guide to filling out the record sheet Article Information This is preliminary information Fill this table in before you start reading Just look at the title and the authors names Title SEL Chapter 10 Understanding Power in Social Life pg 189 201 Author s Michael Schwalbe Analysis Information Examine the article as a whole Try to determine something about the purpose audience and content of the paper before you start reading Look for clues in the title and or subtitle Purpose This paper was written in order to prove that we do not need a great deal of power in order to make something happen or create a change in society and even the slightest bit of power can be sufficient enough however we do need support from those who we ultimately depend on around us 190 Audience This chapter is written for his students and an audience of that age group College students will benefit from this article because it causes them to look at his idea with a different view Subject This article is about how one can come into power and how one can use it effectively or ineffectively Control can be based on force or simply forceful ideas Primary Details Start reading If the article has a labeled introduction you should find the author s statement of purpose or thesis statement before the end of that section Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 Thesis Evidence Getting the support of others requires resources created by a human community language ideas money media weapons and food Being sociologically mindful we can see then that power arises out of social life not out of charismatic personalities 190 When groups are fighting the side with the most guns usually wins The second saying contradicts the first because it says that what a person can be made to do depends on what s he is taught So which is more powerful ideas or guns 190 Instilling ideas in children at young ages can cause them to never doubt or question the initial ideas they are taught 192 Using ideas to instill feelings of need and dependency is not just an advertising ploy 194 Limits The author limits his writing to examples that his audience could easily relate to For example this is seen when he preaches that teaching children concepts at a young age is the easiest way to have them believing and following those ideas for life Also he uses the presidential election as an example because his audience in large part is older students who can vote Point of View In an argument of what tool is more persuasive Schwalbe would definitely defend ideas over guns He believes that being mindful of control and power is more effective than having a gun in one s hand to prove a point violently Presentation and Argumentation Keep reading but watch what the author is doing This step requires that you read the article to gain an understanding of how the author presents the evidence and makes it fit into the argument At this stage of the exercise you should also take the time to look up any unfamiliar words or concepts The last few paragraphs of the article should tidy up the discussion show how it all fits together neatly Concepts Words Legitimate Authority could be created in various ways Power always depends on shared belief and people working together Conclusion A way to see how information is filtered and shaped and to see what we re missing when we rely on one source is to consult a variety of sources and to see how they compare It also helps to remember that all stories have more than two sides Being sociologically mindful we will try to grasp as many sides as we can When people are able to do this and when they are willing to think critically exploiters and fakers of all kinds lose their power This article could be useful to anyone who is struggling to find a balance of power in his or her life or for someone who is looking to gain more control of a situation or position I found this article useful because when reading it in the right light one can feel inspired to take more control and be a bigger force when necessary Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 Implications Evaluation Now that you ve finished reading consider your personal reaction to it not only did I like it it was hard to read or it was boring interesting Evaluating means comparing one thing to some kind of standard that is other articles you ve read in class Personal Reaction I agree with the author to a certain extent I believe that it is not necessary to have a great deal of power to achieve goals however I do not believe that everyone is seeking a great deal of power to begin with I believe that many people find enough comfort in self support and motivation Evaluation Compared to other articles I was not completely impressed by this one because I believe that is argument was weaker than it has been presented in the past Typically he provides a very sufficient amount of evidence so the audience is completely convinced I did not feel the same way after this reading as I normally do for other pieces of his Reference Amanda Graham 1998 The Annotated Sheet A Guide to filling out the Record Sheet http www yukoncollege yk ca agraham guides
