Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 The Annotated Sheet A Guide to filling out the record sheet Article Information This is preliminary information Fill this table in before you start reading Just look at the title and the authors names Title SSP Chapter 3 Mississippi and Freedom Summer p 67 71 Author s D Stanley Eitzen and Kenneth Stewart Analysis Information Examine the article as a whole Try to determine something about the purpose audience and content of the paper before you start reading Look for clues in the title and or subtitle Purpose This paper seems to be stating facts in an organized way to teach a specific lesson about the history of the separation of races in our nation Audience This paper would be directed at an audience of young academics who are either doubting or unknowledgeable about this part of history in our country Subject This article explains the history of the Freedom Summer and Mississippi It further explains how African American citizens were segregated from Caucasian Americans citizens It touches upon the different groups and organizations that helped lift these segregation laws Primary Details Start reading If the article has a labeled introduction you should find the author s statement of purpose or thesis statement before the end of that section Thesis In the 1950s Mississippi was 45 black but only 5 of voting age blacks Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 were registered to vote Evidence In 1962 over 260 blacks in Madison County overcame this fear and waited in line to register Only seven got in to take the test over the two days 67 The NAACP went to Mississippi in an effort to register more blacks in the late 1950s 67 SNCC worker Marion Barry arrived on August 18 and started workshops to teach young blacks nonviolent protest methods Many of the blacks too young to vote jumped at the opportunity to join the movement 68 The Freedom Vote had two main goals 1 To show Mississippi whites and the nation that blacks wanted to vote and 2 To give blacks many of whom had never voted practice in casting a ballot 68 69 Limits The author is required to concentrate only on ways that the voting population changed for the better He focuses on how successful the organizations such as SNCC and NAACP were but speaks very little of any failure Point of View He is definitely siding with how crucial it was for the regulations for blacks to vote to be listed Obviously in a much less anti segregated nation this is very important now a days I agree with his form of argument Presentation and Argumentation Keep reading but watch what the author is doing This step requires that you read the article to gain an understanding of how the author presents the evidence and makes it fit into the argument At this stage of the exercise you should also take the time to look up any unfamiliar words or concepts The last few paragraphs of the article should tidy up the discussion show how it all fits together neatly Concepts Words Conclusion In the end the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party like the Freedom Riders did not fully accomplish its goals The MFDP however was far from a failure It showed blacks that they could have political power It also helped blacks and other minorities gain more representation in the Democratic Party Freedom Party too was an overall success There is no denying the effect that Freedom Summer had on Mississippi s blacks The people who would find this article useful are people who enjoy being active opinionate members of their community and society Anyone who is looking to share their voice or typically already does so would appreciate this paper Personally I was unaware of certain events that this paper included so I gained a great deal of understanding from it Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 Implications Evaluation Now that you ve finished reading consider your personal reaction to it not only did I like it it was hard to read or it was boring interesting Evaluating means comparing one thing to some kind of standard that is other articles you ve read in class Personal Reaction I enjoyed this article because I agree with the groups Every time I learn about this subject I feel as if I would have been one of those students taking a stand for African Americans if it had been a more prevalent issue during my schooling Evaluation Compared to other papers I liked this one because it was informative but not overwhelmed with the author s opinion It allowed him to express his voice but the reader did not feel attacked by an author trying too hard to persuade the audience Reference Amanda Graham 1998 The Annotated Sheet A Guide to filling out the Record Sheet http www yukoncollege yk ca agraham guides aguide htm
