Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 The Annotated Sheet A Guide to filling out the record sheet Article Information This is preliminary information Fill this table in before you start reading Just look at the title and the authors names Title SEL Chapter 1 Making Sense of the World Differently p 1 15 Author s Michael Schwalbe North Carolina State University Analysis Information Examine the article as a whole Try to determine something about the purpose audience and content of the paper before you start reading Look for clues in the title and or subtitle Purpose The author is writing this paper to express how many things one can truly learn in college Not only does a student learn in his or her classes but they also learn through personal experiences Finding oneself is one of the most important lessons one can learn in their years at school Audience The author is addressing students of a college level undergraduates and graduates about the importance of the education and life lessons they are undergoing throughout their schooling experience Subject This article connects the importance of sociology to how important getting something out of one s education is Sociology is a course that is crucial to finding oneself Primary Details Start reading If the article has a labeled introduction you should find the author s statement of purpose or thesis statement before the end of that section Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 Thesis Evidence My own field of study sociology is often justified on the grounds that it helps people gain insight into themselves and into society so they can live more satisfying self determined and responsible lives If sociology or any discipline can do this for people then I think it has good reasons for being It is about how to think sociologically and about why this is worth doing 3 It tells and shows how to pay attention to and make sense of the social world in a sociological way 3 I call this the practice of being sociologically mindful Once you master this practice you can make the pictures for yourself 3 Mindfulness is more than paying attention To be mindful of a thing is to see and appreciate its unique qualities 3 Limits The author limits himself to solely writing about sociology Although there are several courses that correspond with this subject he bases his entire point of view on the benefits that sociology has on one s life Point of View The author believes that sociology can only benefit someone and always improves one s quality of life The first belief is that a good life one that is stimulating intense joyful purposeful caring and dignified can be had only I a society that is peaceful cooperative egalitarian and minimally regimented My second belief is that everyone has an equal right to a good life and so no one should enjoy power and privilege at the expense of others My third belief is that because human lives are intertwined we are all obliged to consider how our actions affect others especially their chances of living a good life 4 Presentation and Argumentation Keep reading but watch what the author is doing This step requires that you read the article to gain an understanding of how the author presents the evidence and makes it fit into the argument At this stage of the exercise you should also take the time to look up any unfamiliar words or concepts The last few paragraphs of the article should tidy up the discussion show how it all fits together neatly Concepts Words Indiscriminate done at random or without careful judgment Sociological Mindfulness the practice of tuning in to how the social world works If sociological mindfulness were common I wouldn t need to argue for it You would simply take it for granted that we all need to be aware of and to think carefully about how the social world works 6 So the problem is not having biases but being held captive by them 14 But being concerned with how others think of us is different from being concerned with how we might affect the world through our actions 14 15 Implications Students who tend to be sociologically unmindful may find a great deal of insight in this article This article has helped me to find a word and definition behind a concept that I have spent a lot of time discussing myself Lauren Kurtz Sociology 105 Conclusion Evaluation Now that you ve finished reading consider your personal reaction to it not only did I like it it was hard to read or it was boring interesting Evaluating means comparing one thing to some kind of standard that is other articles you ve read in class Personal Reaction I loved this article I have never been so inspired by someone s words I have spent a great deal of time on subjects like this but I had never known that there were actual theories behind it I am so glad I read this piece thoroughly because I am truly interested in this material Evaluation In comparison to other articles this chapter takes the cake His clear definitions and theories could not be beaten I agree completely with his concept and I am extremely moved by his words His ideas greatly excite me about continuing to read the rest of his work Reference Amanda Graham 1998 The Annotated
