Antipsychotic Medications AKA Neuroleptics - Reserpineo Effective in treating schizophrenia - Chlorpromazineo Also helped treat schizophrenia; had less side effects- Both drugs reduced NT Dopamine - Reduced the positive symptoms of schizophrenia - Drawbacks of Antipsychotic Meds o Don’t actually cure schizophrenia o Not very effective in eliminating negative symptoms o Unwanted side effects: dry mouth, weight gain and sleepyo Motor related side effects: muscle tremors, rigid movements etc.o Tardive Dyskinesia  Severe, uncontrollable facial grimaces and involuntary movements of mouth o “Revolving Door” Pattern of hospitalization, discharge and re-hospitalization II. Antianxiety Medications - Prescribed to help people deal with problems and symptoms associated with pathological anxiety- Benzodiazepines o Include Valium and Xanax ‘tranquilizers’ o Relax muscles and promote sleep, reduce anxiety levels o Dangerous side effects: Reduce coordination, alertness These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
