Understanding Prejudice - Prejudice: A negative attitude toward people who belong to a specific social group- Racial and ethnic groups are more alike than different - Differences between members of different groups are a lot smaller than differences among various members in the same group II. From Stereotypes to Prejudice: In Groups and Out Groups- Stereotype: Cluster of characteristics that are associated with members of specific social groups - Can include quality that is unrelated to the objective criteria - Stereotype threat: Being aware that your social group is associated with a particular stereotype can negatively impact performance - Creating exceptions allows people to maintain stereotypes in the face of contradictory evidence - People perceive others in two categories o In Group A social group to which one belongs See each other as varied, despite having enough features to belong to thesame group See the diversity within the groupo Out Group A social group to which one does not belong Out group homogeneity effect: See members as similar to one another These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
