Lecture 22Current LectureFeminist TheoryPower: The ability to control/influence another or to resist their attempts at influence/control. Gender is about power-roles have been defined for women bymen to keep them subordinate.Public vs. Private: Dichotomy between men dominating in the public sphere (work, community) and women dominating in the private sphere (family). Feminists advocate for only one sphere.Oppression/subordination: Someone opposing choices on you or for you. Women are on the short end of power structure in our society.1. Women have been exploited, devalued, and oppressed: Women have been excluded form history, literature, and many social sciences until recently. It is a reflection of women’s status. Feminist scholars are committed to documenting contributions. Study of women is important in medicine for example. Sensitive to oppression of others.2. Prevalent assumptions about the family must be challenged: A. The ideology of the “monolithic” family. Idea that there is a family model that is “normal” These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
