Lecture 244. Parental input through the child’s ability to process it. Children may be very different in how they interpret their interactions with their parents. Age and gender play a role.5. Cultural Value of the parents may affect the parent-child relationship6. Pathways to development: As individual is seen as progressing along one or another of an array of developmental pathways. Rejects stages. Pathway is determined by the environment. The way the parent reacts will help set up the way they will act in the future.Ainsworth and the Strange Situation:The “Strange Situation” has been used in literally hundreds of studies; eight episodes, first lasts 30 seconds, rest last about 3 minutes. Involves a parent who brings a child into a strange room, interacts with a stranger, leaves the child for a brief period, and leaves the child with the stranger for a brief period.Three things here that could be upsetting for the child:Separation from Mom.Contact with a strangerAn unfamiliar roomAssessment of attachment: Look at child’s actions when mom leaves and when she returns, with most emphasis on her return, the “reunion episode”. Sensitivity, cooperation, acceptance, accessibility.Group A, Avoidantly Attached/Avoidant:About 20% of most American samples. Not very upset that mom is gone, avoid her when she returns, ignore her when she tries to interact with them. Did become upset, but strangers could comfort as well as moms.Group B, Securely Attached/Secure:These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Showed no distress to new situation. Positive emotion and affection when mom returned.Group C, Ambivalently Attached. Ambivalent:About 10-15%. Frequently show intense distress and crying whether mom is there or not. Either weren’t interested in contact with mom or were ambivalent about it. C Group has been divided into two groups: Resistant Attachment: Are close to mom before the separation. Usually don’t explore much. When mom comes back are mad, resistant, and sometime hit her. Not easily comforted by mom.Disorganized/ Disoriented Attachment: Most insecurity. When reunited with mom, tend to be confused, contradictory behaviors. Might look away, have very flat affect and look, cry after calming down.How does this go forward into future relationships?The P/C relationship causes the child to look at others as trustable, dependable. Causes them to look at themselves in a certain way: loveable, valuable, not loveable, not worth much.Working Models:Are carried into adulthood. It is possible to change.
