HDFS 135 1st EditionLecture 2Introduction to Family Science Focus is on the science of studying families Family Science as a field of study Number of disciplines involved in the study of families- soc, psych, soc. Work, psychiatry, counseling, religion, economics, anthro, law, biology Your orientation will determine the types of questions you askand how you try to answer them-- Our focus is a social science approach to families- we don't focus much on biol., religion, law, etc. How is family science different from other disciplines? Unlike many other academic pursuits just about everyone experiences family life firsthand This experience can be helpful. Although it may also get in the way of our objectivity How has family been defined in the past? Jimmy Carter organized the White House Conference of Families in the late 70s (1978) One of the goals was to determine what constitutes a family The conservatives and the liverals could not come to an agreement between the word “family” and “families” This ended the conference The Defense of Mariage Act (DOMA) 1996 A federal law These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. That affirms that all loving and committed couples who are married deserve equal respect and treatment from the federal government What is family? A complex structure consisting of an interdependent group of individual who: A) have a shared history B) experience some degree of emotional bonding C) devise strategies for meeting the needs of individual family members and the group as a whole Types of families 1. Family of orientation The family you were born into 2. Family of procreation The nuclear family formed by marriage; consiting of self, spouse, and children 3. Blended Family Another name for a step-family, a man & a woman, at least one has been previously married and the child from one or both prior
