Lecture 23Feminist Theory continued4. Feminists are committed to social change in the conditions of women. They say we need to stop asking what women do for the family, but what does the family do for women; or what does it do to women? Clearly have an agenda of change.5. Feminists adopt a critical perspective of intellectual traditions. Theory and research are not value free- admit to a bias in their research. Value-free research is not possible. The seek to provoke change in a social system which inherently favors men.Criticisms of Feminist TheoryOften criticized or ignored. Focus only on issue that affect women and not men therefore oppressing men.Attachment TheoryContributors to Attachment Theory: John Bowlby- Evolutionary – Ethological theory of infant- mother attachment. Human infant enters the world preadapted to interact with and respond to human caregivers. Attachment to a caregiver emerges fully during the second half of the first year of life.Mary Ainsworth: Study in Uganda of home observations of mother-infant pairs. Mother’s who responded sensitively during the early months had infants who cried less and had larger communicative repertoires.Attachment- Is a close, mutual emotional bond between child and a caregiver (mother, father, childcare provider, etc.)Basic Assumptions of Attachment TheoryThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
