Officer Chew- Roles of police dogs Current LectureOfficer Chew speaking about roles of police dogs -His old dog Nala lost feeling in her back leg oNala is a bomb dog- finds bomb; also do article searches (retrieve what the bad guys left behind) -He has three kids and married; worked with dogs since he was 21; He's the only one with access to the explosives here-His job: lots of overtime; take-home swat car where he and his dog spend most of their timeoImportant to understand behavior of his dogoSwat car has a hot-dog system (alarm goes off when too much heat) -Dog's behavior changes to certain odorsoDogs can separate each individual odor of a scent otail slows down when they're getting close to a scent -If dog has good play drive, you can train it to do anything - Nala has a good ball drive -Dog usually takes over personality of handler -Trained to detect 5 categories of bomb- nitrate, chlorate, peroxide, TnT, semtex (DMDNB) -Dogs can detect explosives buried 4 ft. deep -Tracking: oLess than 1% of tracks are successful at Urbana -Training bomb dogs:oUse boxes to train dog to track explosives- put ball into one of the boxes with the bomb- dog sits or lays down next to box with ball- gets reward- repeat- finally, take the ball away but leave the bomb odor -Types of dog: oGerman shepherds, Belgian Malinois- work hard until they can't anymore, so need to be careful working with them- goes after everything even if it is life threatening oDual purpose dogs- track and fightThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
