Beth Finke- Guide Dogs Current Lecture-Beth Finke: -Went to UIUC- lost job at UIUC after becoming blind-Studied overseas in Austria -Blood vessels in her eyes were bursting- had laser surgery- surgeries did not work- became blind-6 older brothers and sisters- had no pets and was scared of dogs-Was blind for 5 years before she got Whitney, her seeing-eye dog-Disease- retinopathy -Wrote a memoir- Long Time No See (from the journal she kept after she became blind) -Perception of beauty changed- bases it off of a person's energy, can't judge people by what they look like -Used white cane but had trouble walking straight- wandered into road -Leaderdogs-place that taught dogs to become guide dogs for the disabled -Applied to two guide dog schools- she was interviewed- was accepted to both schools -Most schools would not accept you if you couldn’t walk with a cane; know how to judge where you are based on the sun hitting your face, how far you walk everyday, need to be capable of walking over 3 miles, your age, your height, etc. -Got her first dog in 1990-A trainer gets 10 dogs to trainoFamily are volunteers- house-trained the dogs oTrained to pull oSocial activities to get them used to noise and crowds oNot to wine oNot prone to ear infections oNo fears oOnly 40% of dogs at the school end up getting trained These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
