Evolution of working dogsII. Dogs in warfareIII. Police dogsIV. Other working rolesCurrent LectureI. Evolution of Working Dogsa. Dogs were originally bred to be working animals and were originally bred for function. These were generally modified hunting behaviors that would emphasize one behavior, but hide or inhibit another until the desired outcome was achieved. (traditional working roles- hunting-sight, scent, and gun dogs, livestock protection and herding, pulling, protection-guarding and warfare) b. The first working dog roles likely went to the sighthounds. (saluki, greyhound, Irish wolfhound, whippet, Scottish deerhound)These dogs were bred to hunt based on sight from long distances. They tend to be faster dogs that chase down prey. These dogs were developed in arid, dessert-like environments.c. Scent hounds were bred and trained to track prey by scent. They tend to have large and droopy ears and more open nasal passages to utilize this ability. They are bred mainly for endurance, not speed. Shorter dogs were for use on hunt on foot and taller dogs were for use when on horseback. (Sometimes used in packs- examples- basset hounds, beagles, foxhounds, harrier, bloodhounds, coonhound) d. Gun dogs were trained for several different purposes to go along with the development of the gun. List the 4 types of dogs and what they do based on the discussion in class.i. Pointers (English pointer)- track and point in the direction where bird is hidingThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.ii. Retrievers (labrador and golden retrievers)- dog goes and brings back prey- gentle with prey iii. Setters- when they finds prey, they set and stay thereiv. Flushing (spaniels)- flush the species out of hiding spot so hunter can shoot b. Some dogs were bred specifically to guard livestock. They are raised with the livestock and see them as family. Used to defend them from natural predators, but do not fight/kill these animals. (ex. Great Purenees, Kangal, Anatolian Shepherd) c. Livestock herding dogs were bred to move livestock for their handler. They must beable to listen carefully to the handler, but quick to think independently as well. Some of these dogs are called "heelers" and nip at the heels of large livestock species such as cattle. (ex. Corgis, border collies, cattle dog, German shepherd, old English sheepdog) d. Pulling or Carting dogs were bred to move large loads for their owners. These are inthe form of sled dogs in colder environments (huskies, malamutes, Alaskan husky) and cart dogs in other areas. (cart dogs puulled carts individually- Bernese mountain dog, Rottweiler, St. Bernards) e. Terriers were originally bred as a form of pest control. Long-legged varieties were good at digging and short-legged varieties are good for chasing prey underground. (Bull terriers- bred for bull baiting and holding bulls for butchers) f. Protection/Guard dogs were trained to protect people and property. It is importantto note these dogs can only discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar people, not good vs. bad.II. Dogs in Warfarea. Dogs have historically been used in warfare for a variety of reasons. Their first recorded use is with the Romans. (attacking enemies, scout and sentry roles, mine/explosive detection, intimidation, messengers) b. Today, most dogs in the military are used to detect explosives and to attack the enemy. Their main role is as a psychological deterrent which helps to keep soldiers safe. (military dogs must have high drive, athleticism, intelligence, strong desire to please its handler) c. Dogs are generally labeled as equipment after they retire. If these dogs are not in the United States at the time of retirement, what happens to them? i. Left behind if not in the US retirement (Robby's Law allowed for placement, but only if not overseas) b. Can any of these dogs be adopted out after retirement?i. Only if from US- official adoption today- Lackland Air Force Base- sent for evaluation- placed as police dogs, home placement, or others stay at base permanentlyII. Police Dogsa. There are many different police dog roles and some dogs can even be cross-trained.b. Patrol dogs are mainly used as a form of intimidation. They are trained to apprehend criminals and can prevent conflicts from happening on scene. They are trained to attack on command, but will also do so if they or their handler are in danger.c. Tracking dogs follow the exact path of a person while a trailing dog will pick up a scent when it has been dispersed by wind or rain. (dogs may detect fleeing suspects or lost children/adults) d. Narcotics dogs are trained to detect illegal drugs.e. passive alert = sitting; active alert = pawing at scent.f. Which type of alert would be used for drugs? For explosives?i. Active for explosives; passive/active for drugs b. Cadaver dogs are trained to ignore live human/animal scents and only to search for human/animal remains.c. Arson dogs are trained to find accelerants used in suspicious fires. (gasoline) II. Other Working Rolesa. Search and rescue dogs (SAR) are trained for disaster situations. (earthquakes, bombing, lost children/adults) They are trained to detect human scents.b. What is the name of the organization discussed in class that is FEMA certified and trains shelter dogs for the working role above? i. Search Dog Foundation b. The Beagle Brigade is trained to detect meat, fruit, and vegetable (agricultural) products at customs and luggage claims at airports. This is to prevent the spread of pests and diseases into the US food supply.c. Water rescue dogs are trained to save drowning victims. They are even trained to jump from helicopters! (popular breed- newfoundland) d. Geese control dogs are trained to drive off animals from golf courses and airports. The idea behind this is to introduce a predator (the dog) into the
