HIS 142 1st Edition Lecture 15 Outline of Last Lecture I. New Deal EraII. “The Great Society” III. Economy during 1970sa. StagnationOutline of Current Lecture I. 1970s (continued)a. Women’s MovementCurrent LectureI. 1970s (continued)- The 1970s was a moment and age of limits- The United States was facing economic concerns – you begin to see an economy that is not growing at the same time that inflation is out of control- The perfect family (stay at home mom, dad works, family dinner, perfect kids) is now harder to obtain due to a single income- Part of the reason inflation is expanding is because of the Vietnam war – without raising taxes to pay for the war, the United States can no longer satisfy the energyneeds of the economy they built- The United States is finally admitting that they lost the war at Vietnam – they pulltroops out and eventually Vietnam is unified under a communist government- Various efforts by women, Latinos, AA, gays, and other groups that have been excluded by the benefits and opportunities created in the 50s and 60s – they are calling into question a lot of the assumptions about gender roles, sexuality, family, race and racial identity- In 1973, the Supreme Court says women should not be denied the access to abortion- They wanted to limit birth control to certain people (married women)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- People think the United States has reached a moral crisis because they are helping woman but there is still not prayer in school. Because of this, Christians are becoming more involved in politics which creates more anxiety and crisis- There was no such thing as rape within a marriage – before the 1980s, no sexual harassment or sexual harassment in the workplace, classroom etc., which called into question the roles of men and women in society- Over the course of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the conservatives were trying to halt things happening – some stress the economic side vs. the social/culture side vs. the foreign policy/international side- The main argument is that the federal government has stepped over its boundary, causing more and more arguments about the government intervening too much into the economy (welfare policy). The government is too powerful and has made things worse – the answer to these crises is to scale back or eliminate the government policies that have been put into place from the 1930s- Some people concentrated on the United States internationally – the United States was too afraid to use its power to have full force around the worlda. Women’s MovementFor some people, this time brought positive changes. There is increasing public acknowledgement that the life created for women n the 50s was less fulfilling and allowed them to few opportunities for careers, independence, economic power, etc. This is the “second wave of feminism” and the “second women’s movement” because we see additional efforts by woman to expand the things available to them. This led to the passage of legislations such as Title 9, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc. Before this, women could not credit anything, they had no economic power or independence and couldn’t take out a car or a house
