HIS 142 1st EditionExam # 3 Study Guide Lectures: 11 - 16Lecture 11 (April 1)What was the 1950s Family Date Video trying to show you? What are some examples of what the “ideal family” should look like?The 1950s Family Date Video was trying to show the viewers what type of family was expected of society during this time. It showed assumptions about what the gender expectations and family expectations were during the 1950s. Some examples of how the “ideal family” would actinclude women looking relaxed and attractive for the men of the family at dinner, everyone needs to clean up before dinner (hair combed, hands washed), the father is in charge of the money of the family, the rest of the family waits to eat while the father serves dinner, the sons of the family get served last, the older children teach the younger children good table manners and that it’s important to not discuss unpleasant or boring topics at dinner.Lecture 12 (April 6)Describe the Vietnam War.The Vietnam War was a much longer conflict for the Vietnamese than the Cold War. It took a lot more effort than the Cold War. For many decades, Vietnam had been controlled by colonial powers (Dutch, French, English, Japanese). A lot of these colonial powers were ok with Woodrow Wilson’s rhetoric, but were not ready to give up their possessions. The United States decided it was important for the leaders in France to keep their power so that the people of France wouldn’t want a change in their government (the United States thought the loss of control and power would lead to the instability of the French government which would lead to communism). Vietnam became temporality “divided” into North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was the communist half, controlled by Ho Chi Minh, while the South was the free half, controlled by the United States. The goal of the United States was to bring these two halves back together, so they set up government in the South to prove they wanted control. When the North tried to unify with the South using military, the United States said the South needed to defend them from the North or the “domino effect” would happen. The United States sent in military, which turned into a long and expensive war between the two.Lecture 13 (April 8)What was the Black Freedom Struggle?The Black Freedom Struggle was something that inspired and motivates many people to make changes such as gays, lesbians and women. During the 1950s and 1960s, African Americans were pushing their way through and finding new strategies and techniques in order to get noticed and have their voices heard. After people began to stand up for themselves, others began to do the same. African Americans, who were part of the population that had been mostdiscriminated against, were finding a way to break through, resist, and organize to change the country’s view on race. The Black Freedom Struggle provided a window for the rest of the Americans to look at their society through and see all of the ways people had been discriminated against in their country.What was the Civil Rights Act?In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed. Essentially, it was the last major piece of legislation that dismantled the legal basis of Jim Crowe. African Americans now legally had the rights to vote and could no longer be discriminated against. But this didn’t mean everything they had dealt with would just disappear. They were still dealing with economic exclusions, poverty, police brutality and being seen as criminals, less intelligent and less hardworking.Lecture 14 (April 13)Describe the New Deal Era.During this time, people’s attitudes and relationships toward the government were changing. They were beginning to look at the government as a body that should be looking out for the welfare of its people (making sure people are able to provide themselves, providing jobs, providing healthcare).What was the idea of “The Great Society”?Lyndon B. Johnson came up with the idea of “The Great Society”, which included things such as Medicare, Medicaid, the expansion of the Social Security Act, the introduction of food stamps, and programs that were intended to open up the economy.What was the economy like during the 1970s? Describe stagflation.During the 1970s, the United States economy was no longer thriving like it had been after WorldWar II and was beginning to take a turn for the worst. The economy was no longer growing and more and more people were beginning to lose their jobs while still being faced with higher prices of goods. The economy was starting to shift away from industrialization (the production of food, building, being a service-based economy). Factories were shutting down or moving elsewhere in order to pay lower wages and avoid unions, which were causing jobs to disappear. Stagflation is when the economy isn’t expanding or growing but inflation is still occurring (the value of a dollar is going down while the prices of things are going up).Lecture 15 (April 20)What was happening with women in the 1970s?During this time, there was increasing public acknowledgement that the life created for women in the 1950s was less fulfilling and allowed them few opportunities for careers, independence and economic power. This led to the passage of legislations such as Title 9 and Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Before this time, women had no economic power or independence and could not even take out a car or house loan.Lecture 16 (April 22)What was happening in the late 20th century?The economy was starting to suffer because they have to pay so much money to unionize workers. Social conservatives were starting to emerge as issues surrounding abortion, women, gays and lesbians started to rise. Most people during this time were concerned with the role of government, the size of government and foreign policy. American’s attitudes about how trustworthy the government was were beginning to change. They were also starting to believe that the United States should be much more willing to use its power around that world and thatthe government wasn’t the solution, it was the problem. Reagan was trying to lower the tax percentage that had to be paid with each paycheck and got it as low as
