Progressive EraCurrent LectureI. 1890’sFamers were finding themselves in high levels of debt and began to reorganize themselves by formal and informal organizations and by social networks.- Omaha Platform – the government was controlling railroads and farmers wanted everyone to have access to public transportationWorkers felt like they were no longer independent people who could provide form themselves and control their own labor. People like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller wanted to do things their own way. 35,000 workers died or got seriously injured each year from working long shifts in unsafe environments at industrial factories.Workers were also paid terribly considering all of the hard work they were doing. At thistime, there was no such thing as minimum wage, maximum hours, disability, or unemployment insurance. Workers had to collectively work together to form labor unions and strikes to try and improve their working conditions.a. Andrew CarnegieAndrew Carnegie wanted things done his way and wanted to get rid of the worker’s labor union. The 1890’s was a decade of conflict and tension rising to the surface because of industrialization.II. Progressive Era (20th Century)A “progressive” is someone who believed the new world created left things that needed to be corrected. They were ok with industrialization. They wanted to reform rather than have a revolution  they wanted things to be safer and more consistent with American ideals such as freedom. They were mostly middle class. They wanted to get rid of thingssuch as prostitution, crimes and drugs and also wanted to clean up the streets and cities.They advocated for positive change in the United
