How did conflict develop and turn into a 50-year war?Outline of Current Lecture I. 1950sII. 1950s Family Date VideoIII. What is emerging in the 1960s?Current LectureI. 1950sWhat we see from the 1950s is roots of what we see today (suburbs, housing developments, etc.) The creation of the Homeowners Load Corporation during the Great Depression made it easier for people to pay for homes. The United States believed that the best and easiest way to find happiness and satisfaction and to protect against communism is to buy a new home and move to the suburbs. If we look deeper, the events that occurred in the 1960s will not seem like much of a surprise. African Americans weren’t allowed to purchase homes in the same areas as whites. Most black women had to work to provide for their families and had to cook and clean for their families on top of their jobs. Race serves as one way were ideals (family, gender, household) were not accessible. There was a lot of anxiety, tension, and conflict during this time. There was also a lot of societal and cultural pressure to maintain the ideal nuclear family. II. 1950s Family Date VideoThis video showed the gender expectations and expectations of family life during the 1950s. It also showed the ideal expectations of what the United States wanted people to do. It shows assumptions about who does what within the family and household. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- The children come home from school looking forward to dinner with their family- Women feel like they owe it to the men of the family to look relaxed and attractive at dinner- The oldest son does his homework and talks on the phone while the daughter helps her mother in the kitchen- Everyone needs to clean up before dinner (hair combed, hands washed, etc.)- The father is in charge of the money and finances in the family- Many families say grace at meal times- The rest of the family waits while the father serves dinner- The sons of the family get served last- The older children teach the younger children good table manners- It’s polite to wait for the server (father) to eat first and the hostess (mother) to eat first- It’s important not to discuss unpleasant or boring topics at dinnerAlthough this video made it seem that people who have families and lifestyles like this, itdid not bring the happiness and satisfaction that the people were promised. III. What is emerging in the 1960s?- Underground Gay and Lesbian Movement- Women’s Movement- Civil Rights Movement- Rock and Roll- Youth
