Jim CrowThe name came from a character about ridiculing blacks but “Jim Crow” is not an actual person. It is known as this because they wanted to limit opportunity to blacks and promote white supremacy. Jim Crow system is much more than a serious of laws about things such as segregation, it is a total political/economic/social system created to make sure white dominancy continued in the United States. The entire country with the exception of the south backed up Jim Crow. The country thought blacks shouldn’t be entitled to the same rights and were inferior and they believed that laws and employment laws should enforce that. This system was operated politically – they excluded blacks from having a political voice. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. VotingThere were literacy tests given before someone was allowed to vote – you had toread a passage and explain it or recite the United States Constitution in order to vote. There was also a poll tax that needed to be paid. It was believed that giving literacy tests and having poll taxes would keep the blacks from voting. There was also a grandfather clause – if your grandfather could vote prior to the civil war than you could vote and not have to pass a literacy test or pay poll taxes.c. Share Crop SystemBlacks could rent small plots of land from landowners in return for a portion of their crop, which they would give to the landowner at the end of each year. Eventually, the crops that the blacks were giving to the landowners were not enough to pay off their debt (example for their use of tools and other supplies). The Share Crop System basically created slavery.d. Convict Lease SystemIf you owned a big mill farm, you made a deal with a local prison that you would hire some prisoners so that sheriffs and police officers could arrest blacks (as young as 8) with very small charges so they would be forced to work. The blacks that were working on the farm did not get paid but the prison got paid. (Slavery by another name)e. Reinforcement of White DominanceThere was segregation and separate facilities for blacks. Blacks were to refer to whites as “sir” and “ma’am”. People were beating up blacks, taking pictures of dead blacks, burning them alive and torturing them – all of this was done to reinforce white dominance.f. Spanish American WarControl of Philippines.
