HIS 142 1st EditionExam # 2 Study Guide Lectures: 4 - 10Lecture 4 (February 25)What was the economy like during the 1920’s?Although it seemed like the economy was prospering, not all people were benefiting from it. The economy had started to become based on consumerism, and eventually it reached a point where the supply of a company was bigger than the demand of customers. A lot of people started turning to credit to pay for things they didn’t have money for.Lecture 6 (March 4) Describe the first New Deal.The first New Deal was the response to the Great Depression. It was created in order to help relieve people from the hardships of being out of work and who couldn’t feed themselves or afford their houses. They wanted to help recover the economy so jobs were created. There were also laws and policies created to reform the American political system and economy in order to make sure that this kind of depression wouldn’t happen again.What was the Works Progress Administration?Public work jobs were created with government and public money. These jobs were provided topeople who needed to go back to work. Not only were public jobs created, but the Works Progress Administration tried to find people jobs in the fields that they were trained and qualified in.What was the Wagner Act?The Wager Act recognized that workers had the rights to create unions. The Wagner Act used the power of the federal government to supervise elections and to investigate in order to make sure workers were not getting fired for trying to form unions.What was the Social Security Act?The Social Security Act set up unemployment insurance and provided a system of welfare. It also puts in place money for people with disabilities who couldn’t work or provide for themselves. The Social Security Act also created workmen’s compensation to support those who were injured on the job.What did the Fair Labor Standards Act do?The Fair Labor Standards Act set up minimum wages and maximum hours for workers so that were standards factories had to follow.Lecture 7 (March 9)How did people feel about World War II?A lot of people criticized the war ethics as well as the draft ethics. Although some people didn’t support it, there was a lot of pressure for people to support the war.How did the government feel about gays and lesbians at this time?The military did not want gays and lesbians to be part of the war, so they conducted screenings prior to the draft in order to keep gays and lesbians out of military service.Lecture 8 (March 11)How were the newspaper ads during World War II targeting women?Newspaper ads and the government during WW II were trying to get women to support the war. They were also trying to convince women to put their money towards helping the military. They were also trying to get women to get military jobs and were trying to convince women that they had a role in major things such as the war.Lecture 9 (March 23)Describe the Cold War.The Cold War lasted more than 50 years between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both sides believed the other side could not be trusted and they both took actions that provoked andconcerned the other side. There were also both equally responsible for the beginning and end of the war.What was the United States trying to contain?The United States was trying to contain communism. They wanted to keep it from spreading so they tried to make new policies to do so. This containment affected home life, gender and sexuality views and political beliefs.What was the Truman Doctrine?The Truman Doctrine was when president Truman offered millions of dollars to countries whosegovernment was struggling. He wanted to support and aid these countries in order to prevent communism. Lecture 10 (March 25)What was the McCarren Internal Security Bill?The McCarren Internal Security Bill required groups to register with the government and restricted the travel and the abilities of people who were expressing thoughts about communism.What was the McCarren Walter Act?The McCarren Walter Act created a restriction on immigration and allowed the government to deport people who were suspected of communism. What was the Lavender Scare?The Lavender Scare was a purge of anyone suspected to be gay or lesbian that was working in the American government. People believed that homosexuality could “spread” and thought thatif it did, it would “pollute”
