Laboratories of Republicanism A. Background: England signs another treaty of Paris in 1783. After the French and Indian war England does not want to fight the war anymore. English will recognize states as independent and give them the rest of the land that they got to the West. Now that the states are independent, the colonists need a government to take care of England's old enemies. Albany plan- ben frank to militarize and have a standing army, some kind of government, wanted the representation of the people, regulating expansion, currency, and parliament can tax to raise money for war/defense. 1. Old charters- House of Burgesses, the wealthy are in charge. They have different values from each other state. after they break away they reconstitute the old charters which doesn't unify them at all 2. Power of written words- to make sure the English doesn’t go back on what they said and that they actually stay independent. First they set up state
