Giovanni de Verrazano (Florence; 1524) •French will try to find a way past Northwest Passage b. Jacques Carter (1534-35) •Believed St. Lawrence and lakes were the way to get to the Pacific. He will set up French settlement at Acadia (Port Royal, 1605). It becomes very important it’s the first successful French colony. c. It makes it illegal to be catholic. Must be Anglican. •Henry will have son Edward VI with Jane Succession: •Edward VI ascends the thrown at 9 years old and dies 6 years later at 15. •Mary (1st daughter of Catherine) claims the thrown she will reinstitute catholic and will shut down Anglican religion. •“Marian Exilles” •Elizabeth (daughter of Anne Boleyn) will sweep into power and reinstitute - Agreement between English and Spain. Privateers (“Sea Dogs”) d. Sir Humphrey Gilbert •Elizabeth will give Gilbert something special •Gilbert will go to “Avalon”e. Sir Walter Raleigh •will establish Virginia •established Roanoke •Raleigh will go back to England around 1588. •He doesn’t get back to Roanoke until 1590. English: •Jamestown (1606) the 1st successful, permanent English colony •1st settlement is given to Virginia Co (joint stock)-sell the idea of their company.
