Chapter 21: “Progressivism from Grass Roots to the White House 1890-1916”- Introduce Progressivism: LaFollette & WI Ideas Current LectureChapter 20: “Dissent, Depression, and War 1890-1900”‘Remember the Maine’ (why go to war with Spain?)- America’s foreign policy played a huge role not only in China, but also in Cubao Spain had been long colonizing Cuba – Cubans were growing dissatisfied o Grew furious and were seeking independence- Increasingly difficult for the Spanish to supply the Cubans- U.S. was becoming more and more aware about the oppression in Cuba- Spanish forced Cubans into re-concentration campso Camps were not intentionally extermination camps – forced relocation camps under armed guardo 1894-1896 – 100,000 Cubans died in the camps – dysentery, influenza, inclement weather, malnutrition etc.- Growing oppression caused America to get involved – U.S.S. Maine entered Cuban territory, and shortly after, exploded – causing 100 American deaths - Began the Spanish American War – lasted 90 days – Spanish lost the war and left CubaThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Teller Amendment followed by TR & his Rough Riders- Congressman Teller – Congressional Dove (anti-war, anti-imperialism) o Encouraged the U.S. to liberate Cuba, and then immediately come back to Americao Amendment encouraged those reluctant to support the war- Roosevelt was the undersecretary of the navy during the beginning of the Spanish American War– resignedo Gathered a large amount of his Ivy-league friends and paid for transportation to Cubao Had butlers, personal chefs, and even their polo-ponies- The newspaper Titans referred to Roosevelt and his friends as the “Rough Riders”o The Rough Riders liberated an area of Cuba – San Juan HillHurst & Pulitzer’s ‘Splendid Little War’- Two Titans of the Media – Hurst and Pulitzer competed to win over the public’s vote for best newspaper- Covered reports on the growing issues if Cuba – the more details the better- Referred to the shortness of the Spanish American War as a ‘Splendid Little War’Platt Amendment & Guantanamo- Issued by Congressmen Platt – promised Cuba “freedom” and “independence”o The Cuban government would not be allowed to go into debto May not write up a contract with a country that could take over Cubao Cuban government must allow the U.S. Army to go in and clean up their country o And finally, lease to the U.S. their coaling and establish naval stations in perpetuity (forever)- Guantanamo Bay was established in Cubao A heavily armed maximum security prison for the most corrupt and dangerous criminals on the planetConsequences of the Spanish-American War- The consequences were just as significant as the war - U.S. achieves a colony – Cuba, Guam, the Wake Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and eventually the Philippines- 5,400 Americans will die during the war o 400 Americans died from war casualties, 5,000 died from diseases - Roosevelt would be in office after the assassination of William McKinleyChapter 21: “Progressivism from Grass Roots to the White House 1890-1916”- Both Republicans and Democrats can be Progressive- Ends at 1916 because of the start of WWI- Progressivism was encouraged by the Populists – wanted more political involvementIntroduce Progressivism: LaFollette & WI Ideas- Introduce Progressivism – Wisconsin elected Governor Robert M.
