Young Adulthood- Attended Choate Preparatory schoolo Graduated in the middle-lower part of his classo All students of the school were raised to go to Harvard but JFK ended up going to Princeton. In consequence he got sick and took a year off of school. After the year off he switched to Harvard.o Played football for the school and injured his back affecting him for the rest of his life- Went to England with his father and got info for his first book While England Slepto This ended up being his senior thesis at Harvard- Participated in WWII as naval intelligenceo Had an affair with Inga Arvad, a suspected spy for Germany. JFK kept getting reassigned by the army to try to stop their relationship.II. Getting into Politics- Goes into congress as war heroo Anti-communisto In house 1947-1953o Supported fighting the cold war as an activist- Ran against Harry Cabot Lodge for US senator and wono Bobby Kennedy (younger brother) helped with JFK’s campaigning- Liberal Democrats Harry S Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt didn’t like JFK for his middle ground views- Married 24 year old Jacqueline Bouvier when he was 36o She was debutant of the yearo Married her to look better in politics Would appear as a playboy or gay if he were a bachelor candidate Still had playboy reputation and continued to date other women- Won 1960 presidency against NixonIII. JFK’s image- At inauguration invited Robert Frost to read poemo Frost was considered an intellectual and JFK wanted to appear as soo This was considered a high point of the presidency position- Dedicated to fighting communism and cold war as an activist- Viewed as a very stereotypical presidential family and were portrayed as so in the public, such as on the cover of Lifetime magazine o Beautiful wife and 2 childrenb. Death- After JFK died Jackie uses the story of Camelot to compare to the president with JFK being King Author and Jackie being Genevieveo Called the times perfect and the family perfect though in reality there were faults in both the Camelot stories and the presidency- JFK appeared healthy and in royalty during his life but in reality JFK was unhealthyo Had Addison’s disease, STDs, and traces of drugs at his death (marijuana, procaine)o JFK’s family wanted the autopsy done in Maryland by a specific doctor because they didn’t want the secrets of his health to be released to the publicIV. Girlfriends of the President- No one knew about all of his girlfriends until 1975 through a reinvestigation of the assassination- List includes: Angie Dickenson, Kim Novak, Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, Mary Penchot Meyer, Judith Campbell Exner, Ellen Rometsch, Pamela Turnero All blonde and gorgeous though Jackie Kennedy is not blonde- Marilyn Monroe:o May 29, 1962 sang Happy Birthday to Kennedy in the White Houseo Continued to call the White House trying to get a hold of JFK even though JFK wanted to break it off Bobby Kennedy also breaks it off with her around the same time making her go crazyo Monroe died of suicide in the form of a drug overdose No pills or signs of drug injections in her autopsy Ended up she died from a suppository of
