Michael Winter3/26/12Ms. ChoEnglish 102Essay 3Peyton ManningI am going to analyze the article on Peyton Manning arguing if he should stay in Indianapolis and be with the Colts. I am going to talk about ethos, pathos, and logos as described by Aristotle. The goal of argumentative writing is to persuade your audience that your ideas are valid, or more valid than someone else's. The Greek philosopher Aristotle divided the means of persuasion, or appeals, into three categories, ethos, pathos, logos. The three appeals make it easy to analyze each element of the article. Each of these articles also follows the Toulmin model, which includes; claims, warrants, grounds, and backing.Ethos or, ethical appeal, means convincing by how the author shows his character and hisfeelings. It does make sense, since people tend to listen to people they respect or look up to. One of the problems with trying to be argumentative is how to succeed in getting the reader to think you are someone who is worth listening to. You should try to make yourself someone who hassome authority, but at the same time has a likeable side to them all the same. When you are likeable, that effects in the audience believing more that you have to say. Pathos means persuading by appealing to the reader's emotions. You can look at advertisements throughout the world and notice that many of them appeal to the consumer’s emotions. The words, symbols, and colors all can contribute to the consumer’s emotions. Language choice affects the audience's emotional response, and emotional appeal can effectively be used to enhance an argument.Logos means persuading by the use of reasoning and using logic. This is a very importantpart of the argument process, and also this was Aristotle’s favorite part. There is inductive and deductive reasoning; these are what help make an effective way to get to the bottom of an argument. One of the biggest parts of arguments is giving reasons. There are many types of ways to add substance to your thesis and there are also some fallacies that need to be avoided when arguing. The article I have chosen to analyze deals with the idea that Peyton should stay with the Colts. The claim of this article is that the best and most obvious decision for Peyton is to stay and play for the Indianapolis Colts. According to the article, if the reader considers all of the trade options, this is the best choice overall. Grounds are statements that support the claim that the article is making. Grounds give more reasons to believe the central argument. The grounds that support this claim are that Peyton should stay because other teams would be hesitant to tradefor a quarterback who is recovering from injury. The Colts understand the fact that he isrecovering and would be glad to take it slow with him. Warrants are chains of reasoning that connect the claim and evidence, or reason. A warrant is the principle, provision or chain of reasoning that connects the grounds, or reason to the claim. Warrants operate at a higher level ofgenerality than a claim or reason, and they are not normally explicit. The warrant is that the Colts are the best place for Peyton when he is recovering from surgery because of the great training staff, so Peyton would have a one hundred percent recovery. There is additional information in this article to provide some backing. They also can draft a quarter back named Andrew Luck to be the starter for the team in case Peyton needs a few weeks to get up to in game speed. This adds to the fact that Peyton should stay with the Colts. The writer of this article seems to be extremely confident in the claims he is making, which would be the qualifier of the article. This article was easy to dissect; sentence by sentence I could recognize all the elements I was looking for. It followed the Toulmin model very well, which made it much easier to understand. This also made the article much more convincing. When the reader discovers the ethos, pathos, and logos they will be able to connect more with the writer of the article. The appeal of the article will grow on the
