Michael WinterMs. ChoEnglish 1029/1/12SWA March 1stAs I read the assigned readings in the Carolina Reader I found the three elements; authority, credibility, and motives. Authority is how the article or whatever is communicated. Credibility is how it is established. It could be established thought using a sense of humor, good looks, visual conveyance of the message, appealing widely accepted principles, appropriate language to show your respect for readers, acknowledging any limitations, exceptions, or even weaknesses in your argument, speaking to readers directly, using colloquial language, and many more. Motives are if the reader thinks whether or not the ideas represented are “good” or not. There are ways these three elements can be used togetherto be built upon one another. You could establish credibility that can also cultivate authority. By using good motives you could create trustworthiness. Showing your authority on a topic is itself a good way tobuild credibility.I think the writer or speaker in our readings does have authority. The article is very well communicated and gives it a sense of control. I as the reader understood the meaning very well. The authority was very clear. They seem very qualified to speak on this subject. They did a good job overall on it. They obtained this authority by using concise descriptions and good factual information. Those two things really attributed to his or her authority. The writer definitely asserts the authority, it is not quite implied. The motives are quite clear as well. They seem to be quite reasonable and I agree with them overall. The writer’s character really does come out in this reading. Which I think is a good thing. You want to read something that makes you feel what the writer is really like inside as a person. I was not really moved by the claims in the article though. Just a simple assignment was to read this and analyze it. I wasn’t that much interested in the subject, even though I agreed with some of the things heor she was writing
