Chem 14CL Report Guidelines for Assignment #10 Oxidation of Borneol to Camphor There are TWO prelabs for this assignment—one for EACH lab period. There is one post-lab report for the synthesis and analysis. Pre-lab for Period 1 (To be turned in on Period 1 of the experiment) NOTE: The experimental procedures for this experiment are provided as a handout, which will be available in labs on May 4, 5. Complete study questions: 1 – 6 in the handout. Question 4 can be paraphrased as “How will you be able to draw conclusions about the presence or absence of unreacted starting material from the IR spectrum?” Report Introduction: This section should include -Names of group members -Title of the experiment -Reference to the experimental procedures -A brief description of the purpose of the assignment -Synthesis and characterization procedure in flowchart format -MSDS information for glacial acetic acid, and sodium hypochlorite Pre-lab for Period 2 Pre-lab Exercise ONLY- In coherent paragraphs answer Question 1 & 2 (see lab manual – page 108) You can use FOUR different sites within the MSDS on the Web for question 1. Note: web site for MSDS is http://www.msdssearch.com. Click on "DB" to start using the MSDS database. Two other excellent web sites that will also link you to MSDS are: http://www.chemnetbase.com (Click on the “Combined Chemical Dictionary” to start the search) and http://chemfinder.cambridgesoft.com/Post-lab Report Only one post-lab report is required. Refer to the lab schedule for the due date. (This is an INDIVIDUAL Report) The report should include the following components: (I) Abstract – summarize goal(s) of the experiment, your experimental results, and the experimental techniques that you used to enable you to achieve such goal(s). (II) Data & Data Analysis Write balanced chemical equations describing what happen during various steps of the experiment Note: Use the experimental handout as a guide when writing various chemical reactions. - Calculate the theoretical yield of camphor - Calculate the % yield for the crude product - Calculate the % yield for the sublimed product (III) Conclusion - Comment on % crude yield (compare to % theoretical yield) - Interpret the camphor product composition and purity from your experimental IR spectrum. Explain all your
