Spring 2004CHEMISTRY 14CLAldol Condensation: Synthesis of DibenzalacetonePRE-LAB REPORT GUIDELINESThis is an INDIVIDUAL reportSpring 2004 CHEMISTRY 14CL Aldol Condensation: Synthesis of Dibenzalacetone Pre-lab reports are due at the beginning of the lab section. The prelab report MUST be written in your lab notebook. (Note: The prelab questions on page 72 are part of the guidelines listed below.) PRE-LAB REPORT GUIDELINES The synthesis of dibenzalacetone (Period 1) is done individually. There is no prelab assignment for period 2. In preparation for lab, your prelab report should include the following sections: INTRODUCTION: In this section outline the goal(s) of the experiment as well as the experimental techniques that you will be using to purify and isolate the desired product(s). PROCEDURE: Prepare a half-page flow chart of the experimental design. Indicate on your flow chart a time plan for the experiment that will allow you to complete the work in 2 hours. Be sure to use the time the reaction is stirring for other activities/preparation. Make sure that you REFERENCE the procedural steps in the lab manual EQUIPMENT: List the equipment that you will need to have on hand for each step in the procedure for week 1. SAFETY: Provide MSDS information for benzaldehyde and acetone. Include the product name; the chemical formula; the formula weight; physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, and density; a brief summary in your own words of any health hazard data; and a summary of spill and disposal procedures appropriate for the small amounts you will be using in the laboratory. (In addition to the MSDS sites provided by the University of California, http://www1.ucop.edu/oehsp/msds.html you may want to look at http://www.chemnetbase.com/ Click on “Combined Chemical Dictionary (CCD)” and start the search.) EXPECTED PRODUCTS: See Prelab Assignment Question 1 (Lab manual page 72)POSTLAB REPORT GUIDELINES FOR PERIODS 1 & 2 In order to write this report, you will need to finish the dibenzalacetone isomer study in the Molecular Modeling lab. Make sure you copy the isomers with bond angles, bond lengths etc. into your lab notebook during the Molecular Modeling lab period. This post-lab report should include both period 1 & 2 information (see below). This is an INDIVIDUAL report PERIOD 1 (Aldol Synthesis and Purification) DATA *Report all reagent amounts, any procedural changes to the directions and all observations. *Report the volume of ethanol that you needed for the recrystallization step. *Describe the product that you obtained. *Report the weight and the melting point of the recrystallized product. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION *Show the chemical equations used to calculate the limiting yield *Calculate the % yield of dibenzalacetone that you obtained. Show all your work. *Compare your melting point to the literature value(s) for dibenzalacetone *What can you conclude about the purity of the compound that you made? Explain!! Note: If necessary, review melting point theory in your14BL notes or consult your Pavia text. CONCLUSION * Comment on % yield * Compare the experimental melting point with literature value * Comment on the purity of your recrystallized product based on your experimental melting point. PERIOD 2 (This part is NOT the same as your ON-LINE Web CT Molecular Modeling report) *Based on the heats of formation (obtained from molecular modeling) and the geometry of the molecules, explain which isomer should be the "preferred" product. Discuss whether this is consistent with your results See Molecular Modeling Report Guidelines in a separate file for submission procedures for your on-line
