Remote Access to Cadence at GWU for ECE 126 / 128 / 213 / 214 / 216 / 218 For Windows 01/2012 – Thomas Farmer To access cadence / synopsis tools remotely (from home or on campus), two tools are required: a) SSH client software (we use PUTTY in this tutorial) b) VNC client software 1) Download an SSH client, we recommend putty: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html (download putty.exe, save to your desktop) If not available at the link above, click here to download the version stored at GW on10/08: http://www.seas.gwu.edu/~vlsi/ece126/software/putty/putty.exe (save to your desktop) 2) Open and configure Putty: - Putty does not need to be installed, double click on the putty.exe icon on your desktop - Fill in the GWU server name as follows: Type in the remote-access server name in these two locations: shell.seas.gwu.edu Then Press Save shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu3) Open an SSH connection to the GW server, by pressing: “Open” - After Pressing Save, press the “Open” button - The first time putty connects to the GWU server, a message like this will appear, press YES shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu- Login using your SEAS username and password: - If you cannot login, contact your GTA for assistance, you need to be added to a remote access group to use the GWU remote access server. 4) Setup your VNC Port # by copying/pasting this command: ~vlsi/course_all/vnc_scripts/update_profile_vnc - Write down the number that is displayed on the screen (below you see it as XXXXX): Your VNC Port number is: XXXXX - Once you have this number, type in exit to close the session: exit shell.seas.gwu.edu WRITE THIS # down!5) On your PC, open putty up once again, highlight the GW server and click LOAD: Then click on Load shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu Click on shell6) Click on the SSH category under “connection”: Enable Compression & Move Blowfish & Arcfour to the top of the encryption cipher list7) Expand the SSH category in putty, click on the Tunnels subcategory: This SSH tunnel is a secure link between your workstation and GWY. Without this secure link, any traffic you send over VNC could be eavesdropped, be it passwords or important design information! It is essential that you set up this tunnel! For the XXXXX below, use the numeric VNC Port # you were given in step 4. Each person must have their own unique number. Type your VNCPORT #: in the Source PORT field as shown here. Note: XXXX is the # you found in step 4 Then type: localhost:VNCPORT# in the field here. Click on the ADD button after you have entered the Source port and Destination After you click ADD, Forwarded port list should look like this (except with your #) XXXXX localhost:XXXX LXXXXX localhost:XXXXX8) Return to the Session Category in Putty and Save the configuration: - After Pressing Save, press the “Open” button Press Save, WITHOUT PRESSING SAVE, STEPS 6-7 will be LOST! shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu shell.seas.gwu.edu9) Login using your seas username and password: 10) Type the following commands to enable VNC in your environment: vncpasswd You will be prompted to create a password, you can use your same SEAS password to make it easier on your memory. 11) Next type the following command: cp ~vlsi/course_all/vnc_scripts/xstartup ~/.vnc shell.seas.gwu.edu12) Now that your environment is setup, you will only ever need to type the following command to start the VNC server on the sun workstation, type: start_vnc 13) If no error messages appear (inspect the window carefully), type the following command: prevent_timeout This will act like a screen saver, it prints a list of who‟s logged in every 20 minutes or so. This will prevent the SSH client from timing out. 14) You can now minimize the SSH client (putty), we will now start the next part of the process. - In the future, once you login to the sun workstation using PUTTY, you will only need to perform steps 12 and 13.15) Download the VNC viewer software, (it‟s also free!) http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html - You do not have to fill in the fields, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click: Proceed to download - Download the following file: 1) VNC Free Edition Viewer for Windows (Executable NOT the zip) Note: This file is at the bottom of the list! Make sure to download ONLY the viewer - Save this file to your desktop If not available at the link above, click here to download the version stored at GW on 10/08: http://www.seas.gwu.edu/~vlsi/ece126/software/vnc/vnc-4_1_3-x86_win32_viewer.exe 16) This program doesn‟t need to be installed, simply double click on the file VNC VIEWER file you downloaded. It will start right away without installation. If is requires installation, you‟ve downloaded the wrong program, recheck step 11. 17) If working properly, you will see the following screen: - For Server: type: localhost:VNCPORT# - change the number above, to your VNCPORT#, from step 4 - Press OK - Type in the password you created in step 10 18) If all goes well, you will see a desktop-like GUI, just like at GW SEAS-CF lab. 19) Once logged in, press the button: F8, click on the “Full Screen” option. This will enlarge the screen to consume your entire monitor - To get out of full screen mode, press F8 again, and uncheck the “Full Screen” option 20) Now you can open a terminal window as you normally do at GWU, and open cadence. Make certain that you EXIT cadence once you are done. Do NOT leave Cadence running in VNC and then come to GWU and expect it to run. localhost:XXXXX21) To take a screen shot from VNC, you cannot just press PRINT SCREEN as you normally would. Follow these steps to take a screen shot: - While connected to the workstation and you have something on screen you‟d like to capture… - Press F8, click on “Options” - Click on the “Inputs” tab - Uncheck the box: “Pass special keys directly to server” and press OK - Now you can press the <print screen> button on your keyboard and paste the screen shot into an application like MS word - Once you are done with screen shots, press F8 again, and re-check the “Pass special keys directly to server” option 22) WORDS OF CAUTION - If you run Cadence under VNC, make sure to exit cadence when you are done.
