Remote Access to Cadence at GWU for ECE 126 10/2008 – Thomas Farmer To access cadence tools remotely (from home or on campus), two tools are required: SSH client software and a X Server client. PC Instructions: 1) Download an SSH client, we recommend putty: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html (download putty.exe, save to your desktop) If not available at the link above, click here to download the version stored at GW on10/08: http://www.seas.gwu.edu/~vlsi/ece126/software/putty/putty.exe (save to your desktop) 2) Configure Putty: • Putty does not need to be installed, double click on the putty.exe icon on your desktop Type in the workstation name you use in class in these two locations hobbes.seas.gwu.edu (note sun26 is an example) Then Press Save3) Click on the SSH category in putty: Enable Compression & Move Arcfour & Blowfish to the top of the encryption cipher list4) Expand the SSH category in putty, click on the X11 subcategory: Enable X11 forwarding5) Return to the Session Category in Putty and Save the configuration: • After Pressing Save, press the “Open” button • The first time putty connects to the GWU server, a message like this will appear, press YES Press Save Type in the workstation name you use in class in these two locations hobbes.seas.gwu.edu (note sun26 is an example)6) Login to hobbes using your seas username and password: • This will provide “terminal” level commands, we now need to install the X Server software to enable GUI applications (like cadence). 7) once logged in, type the following commands: ssh –X sun26.cflab.seas.gwu.edu (accept any warnings, type in your seas password when prompted) 8) sun26.cflab.seas.gwu does not exist, you must replace sun26 with the workstation # (1-25) you use in lab. To determine the workstation # you use in class, login to a sun workstation (when you are in Tompkins 405), open a terminal and type: $ hostname 9) When you login to the sun workstation, you can type the following command: w (just “w” that’s it!) It will list the user’s currently logged into the system. If someone is logged into that workstation, type “exit” and then login to another workstation until you find an empty one. 10) Do not use the same hostname as a friend, this will cause both of you to login to the same workstation. If you both use cadence at the same time, the machine will slow down tremendously. You will be sorry when your both working on a HW due the next day!11) Download X Server software, we recommend Xming (it’s free!) http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/ • Scroll down the page and look for the category: “PUBLIC DOMAIN RELEASES” • Do NOT attempt to download from the “Xming Website Releases” they require a password o Download two files: 1) Xming 2) Xming-fonts If not available at the link above, click here to download the version stored at GW on 10/08: http://www.seas.gwu.edu/~vlsi/ece126/software/xming/Xming-6-9-0-31-setup.exe http://www.seas.gwu.edu/~vlsi/ece126/software/xming/Xming-fonts-7-3-0-22-setup.exe 12) Install “Xming” first, accept all the defaults 13) Install “Xming-fonts” second, install it in the same directory you installed “Xming” in, accept all defaults 14) Once installed, from the start menu, choose: Xming->Xming • If windows asks about giving this application “firewall access” make sure to ALLOW access. 15) If Xming is running correctly, you will see a small X in the bottom right hand side of your task bar:16) Once Xming is up and running, return to the putty window (if it has timed out, re-login): • Type in the command: xclock & • If everything is properly installed, a small GUI clock should appear • If you have Xming running and the clock has not appeared, then most likely your firewall is blocking port 6000 o Check the windows firewall and any virus detection software’s built in firewall to ensure port 6000 is unblocked. 17) If the xclock appeared, you are now ready to run Cadence. You can use the terminal window as you always do, simply type: run_virtuoso.ksh & And Cadence will open up remotely from the GW server on your desktop! Happy X-ming!! 18) A note of caution: • Always exit Cadence BEFORE you exit putty or Xming • If you do not do this, Cadence will “lock” all the files you had open. • If this happens by mistake, read the following tutorial to remove Cadence lock files:
