Remote Access to Cadence at GWU for ECE 126 10/2008 – Robert Proie Mac Instructions: Prerequisites • You must have X11 installed on your computer. If you do not, the simplest way is to install it from the OS X DVD that came with your computer. • If you aren’t sure whether or not it is installed, go ahead with step 1. If you see an X11 application in your utilities folder, than it is installed. • If you do not see an X11 application, click on this link for how to install it from your OS X DVD that came with your computer: http://www.seas.gwu.edu/~vlsi/ece126/FALL/reference/MAC_X11_install_instructions.pdf Procedure 1) Opening the command line window: Navigate to Applications > Utilities If you are using Tiger (OS X 10.4) open the X11 application. If you are using Leopard (OS X 10.5) open the Terminal or X11 application.2) Connecting to the GWU workstation in Tompkins 405: • At the command prompt that you opened in step 1, type in the following: ssh -c arcfour,blowfish-cbc -YC [email protected] (For the curious) -c arcfour,blowfish-cbc specifies 2 ciphers that work well with compression -Y enables trusted X11 forwarding. This is necessary for some graphical applications. -C enables compression. • Once logged into hobbe.seas.gwu.edu, type in: ssh –X sun26.cflab.seas.gwu.edu • sun26.cflab.seas.gwu does not exist, you must replace sun26 with the workstation # (1-25) you use in lab. To determine the workstation # you use in class, login to a sun workstation (when you are in Tompkins 405), open a terminal and type: hostname • When you login to the sun workstation, you can type the following command: w (just “w” that’s it!) • It will list the user’s currently logged into the system. If someone is logged into that workstation, type “exit” and then login to another workstation until you find an empty one. • Do not use the same hostname as a friend, this will cause both of you to login to the same workstation. If you both use cadence at the same time, the machine will slow down tremendously. You will be sorry when your both working on a HW due the next day! • Enter your password. You are now remotely connected to the lab computer. • You can use the terminal window as you always do, simply type:virtuoso & Cadence will open up remotely from the GW server on your MAC • A note of caution: o Always exit Cadence BEFORE you exit the terminal window, or before shutting down your machine o If you do not do this, Cadence will “lock” all the files you had open. o If this happens by mistake, read the following tutorial to remove Cadence lock files:
