ESS 205 Anatomy and Physiology Lecture 7 Outline of Last Lecture I. Stratified Epithelia II. Connective TissueOutline of Current LectureIII. Connective Tissuea. Fibrousb. Cartilage Current Lecture1. One category of connective tissue is fibrous connective tissue. There are two subcategories underneath fibrous CT. a. Loose-Most of the space is ground substancei. Areolar-small open spaces, passageway for nerves and blood cells (fascia between muscles), it holds water extremely well. ii. Reticular-supportive framework for lymphatic organs. Found in lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and bone marrow.iii. Adipose-these fat cells are large, empty-looking, with the nucleus against the membrane. Its function includes energy storage, insulation, and cushioning. It is subcutaneous and highly metabolic.b. Dense-has less ground substance. Fibers fill spaces between cells. i. Dense Regular-packed, all parallel, collagen, compressed fibroblast with little open space. In tendons and ligaments.ii. Dense Irregular-collagen fibers running in random directions. There are few visible cells, withstands stresses applied in different directions. Located in deep skin, joint capsules, and capsules around organs. 2. Cartilage Tissue is supportive with a rubbery matrix. The chondroblasts produce the matrix. There are no blood vessels so diffusion is necessary to obtain nutrients and These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Hyaline Cartilage-clear, glassy matrix. Supports airway and eases joint movement. It is also located on ends of bones and sternal ends of ribs. It is alsoa supportive material in larynx, trachea, bronchi, and growth plates. Lacunae is a small cavity and hyaline group together within the lacunae. **Meniscus is notpart of hyaline cartilage**b. Elastic Cartilage-is like hyaline with weblike mesh of elastic fibers amongst the lacunae. Elastic Cartilage provides flexible, elastic support. It is located in the external ear and epiglottis (the body part that closes the trachea when you drink or eat). **This type of cartilage is weaker than hyaline**c. Fibrocartilage-contains extensive, coarse parallel collagen fibers. It resists compression and absorbs shock. It is located in the pubic symphysis (where both sides of hips come together at the bottom), meniscus, and intervertebral
