ESS 205 Anatomy and Physiology Lecture 8 Outline of Last Lecture I. Connective Tissuea. Fibrousb. Cartilage Outline of Current LectureII. Connective Tissuea. Boneb. BloodIII. Muscular TissueIV. Nervous TissueCurrent Lecture1. The third category of connective tissue is bone tissue. It has two forms of osseous tissue. The first is spongy bone. It looks spongy in appearance and it makes up the delicate struts of the bone. The second is compact or dense bone. It is hard and solid in appearance. It’s make up is more complex and will be covered in later lectures. 2. The fourth and last category of connective tissue is blood. It is literally a fluid connective tissue that travels through vessels. Its function is the transportation of dissolved matter. It has a variety of cells and cell fragments; some with nuclei, some without. 3. Muscular tissue is the third category of TISSUES. It is not part of connective tissues. They are elongated cells that respond to stimuli by contracting. Its function is to exert physicalforce on other tissues. For example: moving hand, pushing blood through a vessel or expelling urine. It is also an importance source of body heat. There are 3 histological types of muscle. Skeletal is long, unbranched, cylindrical cells with striations. Its functionis posture and movement (voluntary control). Cardiac muscle is the second subcategory These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. The function is to pump blood (involuntary control). The last subcategory is smooth muscle. It is made up of short, fusiform cells that are NOT striated. The function is swallowing, control of airflow, GI tract functions. 4. Nerve tissue is the last category of tissues. There are neurons- large nerve cells that transmit messages. Its function is internal communication between cells. The main areasit is located is brain, spinal cord, nerves and
