To practice teaching using different methods.Assignments(i) Re-examine your self-assessment on the Standards for Foreign Language Learning, what is it that you need to refine/would like to learn from this set of guidelines?(ii) Explore the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages website. http://www.actfl.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1 Notice the kinds of resources they have available for you. See what other professional foreign language associations might be out there with useful resources and perspectives (e.g. check out http://www.discoverfrance.net/France/Language/DF_lang_assn.shtml)(iii) Develop a table that highlights the distinguishing characteristics of the oral, situational and audiolingual methods. (iv) Find foreign language lesson plans on internet and identify the underlying approaches/methods and assumptions about learning foreign languages(v) 2-3 times over the quarter adapt a lesson plan to integrate 3 different methods/approaches. Compare and contrast the different approaches through those lesson plans. Part of that analysis should involve making explicit the underlying assumptions about language acquisition and considering the pros/cons of the approach given what you know about learning. (vi) As part of microteaching and curriculum development project write a lesson/unit that integrates strategies that seem congruent with what you are learning about language acquisition and learning. Build in pre-assessment and post assessment. (vii) Video tape this teaching. Check with teacher/school about getting any necessary permission (have you already done this for content literacy?). Identify your goal for the lesson and the distinguishing characteristics of the language learning approach/method you were using. Watch video to see how you enacted the approach/method. Identify 1-25 minute clips that you find interesting/puzzling given what you are learning about foreign language methods. Share the clips and your analysis with me.(viii) Present/write a rationale for which of all the approaches you’ll experiment with furtherin your teaching and why.Week Reading
