Who is the Adolescent?Plan for weeks 5-8PART 2 Examining the themes and potential myths of adolescenceBetween weeks 4 and 8, we will examine and analyze the themes and questions that emerged out of your surveys using the perspectives of sociology and psychology. We will examine what the some of the professional and academic literature says about particular themes (i.e., cultural,historical and social contexts surrounding adolescents; identity development; the role and function of peer groups; emergent sexuality; and cognitive development). Throughout the quarter, we will regularly consider the implications of what we learn from our sleuthing, be it in public, professional or academic forums, for relevant student pedagogy. Week Guiding questionfive What’s the nature of self-concept, self-esteem and identity of adolescents? How might it play out in classrooms?Homework:Review the questions you posed about identity. Readings► Read/review At the Threshold chapter 5 with particular focus on pages 130-135: “Issues of Identity”► Read At the Threshold chapter 14, “Self and Identity Development.”Make sense of the key ideas► Prepare a visual map that (i) distinguishes between adolescent self-esteem, self-concept and identity formation; and (ii) examines how the key issues for adolescents that the author raises might play out in your classrooms/schools. Bring with you► Bring in the identity journals you’ve written so far, - for reflective writing on how self-esteem, self-concept and identity have been significant to your experiences as a student. ► Bring in your field reflections from week 4 on children with special needs. six What is the nature of Ethnic/Racial identity development? Homework:Readings ► Excerpts from Beverly Tatum’s Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?Everyone reads chapter 2: “The complexity of identity” PLUS Jigsaw preparation of one of following chapters (to be handed out in class): - Ch 4 “Identity development in adolescence” - Ch 6 “Development of white identity” - Ch 8 “Critical issues in Latino, American Indian & Asian Pacific Identity development”- Ch 9 “Identity development in Multiracial families”► Make a visual / outline of your assigned chapter that would help your colleagues understand (i) the key ideas of the chapter, and (ii) support, illustrations and examples of key ideas.► Bring copies of that visual for your colleagues and one for
