Informing your Practice as a TeacherLibrary Research & Masters Paper – MIT 2007Upcoming: we will work together to (i) examine and summarize what you are learning from reading the abstracts; (ii) compare and contrast types of articles you are finding in ERIC and Psych_INFO; (iii) practice ways of searching for different types of articles (e.g. case study, research, literature review, etc); (iv) locate articles in the library; and (v) order articles using interlibrary loan.PART ONE: What are you learning from reading abstracts?1. Pick one abstract that seems particularly interesting/relevant and explain to neighbor (i) what it seems to be about, (ii) why it seems interesting or relevant, and (iii) what questions it provokes for you?- Put good models out for how people have started using the relevance column. Useful strategies: Succinct summary of relevant part. Why it seems relevant. Questions provoked by abstract that you might want to read for.- Remind people to keep track of details (e.g. whether searched title, abstract AND citation)2. Share your current thinking about a possible research topic. Broaden search to look in more disciplinary areas and for additional viewpoints:3. compare and contrast types of articles you are finding in ERIC and Psych_INFO 4. Next week do search on Ethnic News Watch (2 relevant articles).PART TWO: practice ways of searching for different types of articles (e.g. case study, research, literature review, etc); 1. Key word/Abstract/Descriptor + Lit Review/ Review of the literature in Abstract.2. Scan abstracts for relevant lit review. - May need to search in more than one database (e.g. Psych, Eric, Soc, EthnicWatch, etc)- Notice if really is a lit review EXAMPLE ERIC- motivation title, literature review abstract. (e.g. may say something like “this study is based upon a review of the literature” i.e. it’s a study not a lit review)3. Remember different databases have different names for things: - Strategy for finding research articles on ERIC: report type -> 143 Reports: Research- Finding research articles on PSYCH_INFO --- content type Play: Find relevant case studies, literature reviews, studyPART THREE: Finding the article:- Accession # -- ED or EJ? If ED write down number. Microfiche database – reader and copyier- ERIC – access ERIC- EJ – locate article at TESC -- If not there order through interlibrary loan- If at TESC—on line? Or microfilm? Or periodicalREPORT TYPES ON ERIC010 Books 020 Collected Works: General 021 Collected Works: Proceedings 022 Collected Works: Serials 030 Creative Works 040 Dissertations/Theses 041 Dissertations/Theses: Doctoral Dissertations 042 Dissertations/Theses: Masters Theses 043 Dissertations/Theses: Practicum Papers 050 Guides: General 051 Guides: Classroom: Learner 052 Guides: Classroom: Teacher 055 Guides: Non-Classroom 060 Historical Materials 070 Information Analyses 071 ERIC Publications 072 Book/Product Reviews 073 ERIC Digests in Full Text 080 Journal Articles 090 Legal/Legislative/Regulatory Materials 100 Non-Print Media 101 Computer Programs 102 Machine-Readable Data Files 110 Numerical/Quantitative Data 120 Opinion Papers 130 Reference Materials: General 131 Reference Materials: Bibliographies 132 Reference Materials: Directories/Catalogs 133 Reference Materials: Geographic 134 Reference Materials: Vocabularies/Classifications 140 Reports: General 141 Reports: Descriptive 142 Reports: Evaluative 143 Reports: Research 150 Speeches/Meeting Papers 160 Tests/Questionnaires 170 Translations 171 Multilingual/Bilingual Materials 999 Miscellaneous(iv) Locate articles in the library (Next week—Find, locate and read one literature review that is relevant to the topic that you are interested in. In any case, read the most relevant ones. Write a reflection that addresses:1. What are 2-3 significant things that you learned about the topic by reading the review?2. What seem to be the big issues addressed in the literature review? What are the big questions that the review focused around? What are the points of debate/contention?3. What are some of the things that you need to practice/learn in order to make meaning out of articles such as
