POLS 2312 1st Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Current Lecture I Texas Population II Texas Political History A Five State Option B Early Statehood and Secession C Progress and Reform III Texas Political Culture A Moralistic Political Culture B Individualistic Political Culture C Traditionalistic Political Culture D Definition of Elite E Definition of Provincialism Current Lecture l Texas has the 2nd largest population with 26 million as of 2013 Anglos make up 45 Hispanic 37 Black 12 and Asian 3 8 88 live in urban areas that are involved in economy driven by high tech industry and globalization ll The Texans won the battle of San Jacinto but lost the battle of the Alamo and yet we always remember the Alamo more A When Texas entered the Union we were given a 5 state option which meant that we could divide into 5 separate states We would have ten Senators and the House would be the same This never happened because people argued about how it would be divided B Early statehood and secession occurred between 1846 and 1864 In 1860 Texas seceded from the Union but had to rejoin when the Confederates lost the Civil War After this we made a new constitution in 1869 and elected E J Davis as governor C The progress and reform of Texas occurred between 1886 and 1913 In 1890 Texas established the 3 member railroad commission These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute lll Texas has broadly shared values beliefs and attitudes about how the government should function and how politics should operate American political culture emphasizes values of liberty equality and democracy A Moralistic Political Culture is the belief that government should be active in promoting public good and that citizens should participate in politics and civic activities to ensure that good B Individualistic Political Culture is the belief that government should limit its role to providing order in society so that citizens can pursue their economic self interests C Traditionalistic Political Culture is the belief that government should be dominated by political elites and guided by tradition D Elite is a small group of people that dominates political process E Provincialism is a narrow limited and self interested view of the world
