When did early statehood and secession occur in Texas?Early statehood and secession occurred between 1846 and 1864. In 1860 Texas seceded from the Union, but had to rejoin when the Confederates lost the Civil War. After this we made a newconstitution in 1869 and elected E.J. Davis as governor.When did progress and reform occur in Texas?The progress and reform of Texas occurred between 1886 and 1913. In 1890 Texas established the 3 member railroad commission.What is moralistic political culture?Moralistic Political Culture is the belief that government should be active in promoting public good and that citizens should participate in politics and civic activities to ensure that good.What is individualistic political culture?Individualistic Political Culture is the belief that government should limit its role to providing order in society, so that citizens can pursue their economic self-interests.What is traditionalistic political culture?Traditionalistic Political Culture is the belief that government should be dominated by political elites and guided by tradition.Define elite.Elite is a small group of people that dominates political process.Define provincialism.Provincialism is a narrow, limited, and self-interested view of the world.Lecture 2 (August 25) Governors and Physical Regions in TexasWho was E.J. Davis?1876 Texas gets readmitted to the Union when our constitution is ratified. Our first governor was Republican E.J. Davis who was charged with corruption and only served one four year term before we kick him out.Who was Farmer Jim?James E. Ferguson served from 1914-1918 and called himself Farmer Jim to emphasize his rural background. He was an anti-prohibitionist and got impeached and convicted in 1917 under charges of illegal use of public funds.Who was Ma?Farmer Jim’s wife “Ma” ran for governor and won. She was anti-klan, was elected in 1924, and was the first Texas female governor. She stayed in office until 1928.Who was Pappy?“Pappy” or W. Lee O’Daniel was a flour salesman, he had no political experience and was elected governor in 1938-1945.What occurred between 1929 and 1939?The Great Depression occurred between 1929 and 1939. In 1929 the stock market crashed and the entire nation is crushed. In 1935 Prohibition ends.What were the Gulf Coastal Plains?The Gulf Coastal Plains extend from Louisiana boarder and the Gulf of Mexico. It is mainly in East Texas and consists of forests.What were the Interior Lowlands?Interior Lowlands consist of an agriculture economy, rural population, and ranches.What were the Great Plains?The Great Plains are in western Texas and consist of ranching and petroleum production in the northern plains. While agriculture and cotton production dominate the southern plains. The Ogallala Aquifer is a major player in the southern plains.What was the Basin and Range Province?The Basin and Range Province is where you’ll see the true mountains in the Guadalupe Range. Southeast is Big Bend country. Rainfall and population are sparse in this region.Lecture 3 (August 27)Texas Current Governor and Economic Change in TexasWhat accusation is against Rick Perry? What does he support?Rick Perry was indicted and accused of pressuring a DA into resigning because of her drunken charges. Perry went on the Jimmy Kimmel show where he talked about how he is for decriminalizing marijuana. What is the importance of cotton?Cotton is one of the oldest crops grown in Texas. Serious cultivation of cotton came in 1821 withthe arrival of Anglo Americans. Political independence, statehood, and ongoing removal of Native American “threat” in years before. The Civil War, barbed wire, building of railroads, and anewly designed plow increased cotton productivity. The sharecropping and tenant system resulted in political unrest and formed the Populist movement.What is the importance of cattle ranching?Cattle Ranching extends to the 17th century when the Spanish brought livestock to the New World. After the Civil War the cattle industry took off as cattle drives and railroads began opening up new markets in the East, but struggled with the invention of barbed wire.What is the importance of oil?Oil was first sighted in mid-17th century by Spanish explorers. January 10, 1901 was when oil started booming because Spindletop discovered it. The Interstate Highway made Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston become very populous. Because of the oil collapse in the 80’s high tech industry dominated the 90’s. The Austin-San Marcos area became the production center for computer chips, personal computers, and other related computer hardware. The Dallas area is home to a number of important electronic-equipment companies.What is NAFTA?The North American Free Trade Agreement sought to create free trade zones in North America. Many groups argued that free trade would hurt U.S. workers because of cheap labor in Mexico but it also gave us more income.Lecture 4 (August 29)Texas Demography and EconomyDefine Urbanization.Urbanization is the process by which people move from rural areas to cities. 88% of the population reside in urban areas.Define Suburbanization.Suburbanization is the process by which people move out of central city areas to surrounding suburban areas.Define Political Economy.Political Economy is the complex interrelation between politics and economy, as well as their effect on one another.How is Houston significant?Houston is located in Harris County and is the largest city in Texas and the 4th largest in the U.S. The city originated in 1836 from Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen who sought to create a “great interior commercial emporium of Texas”. Houston was named after Sam Houston. Its economic well-being depended on cotton, commerce and railroads, but oil was what transformed Houston.How is Dallas/Fort Worth significant?Dallas was founded as a trading post in 1841 near where two roads were to be built by the Republic. Cotton and railroads boomed Dallas economy. Technology is also a big part of Dallas asit is the 3rd largest technology center in the nation. Fort Worth originated as an army post in
