He was born in 1950 and he was in Austin with Jimmy Kimmel in March 2014. Perry calls Austin the blueberry in the tomato soup, and he wants to decriminalize marijuana, not make it legal. Snoop Dog was in Perry’s dressing room before him so his room smells like pot. Perry claims he’s never smoked marijuana before and shot a coyote while jogging.Who’s running for attorney general?Ken Paxton is the Republican running for Attorney General and he has some legal issues. He’s running against Democrat Sam Houston. Ken Paxton won this race.Who’s running for Comptroller?Glenn Hegar is the Republican running for Comptroller and his opponent is democrat Mike Collier. This race is actually closer than most people thought it would be. Glenn Hegar won.What are some governor perks?Governor perks are that they get security, a cook, a gardener, a mansion, and a salary of $150,000. The mansion was built in 1856, west of the Mississippi River and it was damaged by afire. Someone through an alcohol bottle with gas at the front door and the fire damaged the front of the mansion. They still have not caught the person who did this.Lecture 20 (October 20) Political AdsWhen did early voting start?Early voting started Monday October 20th, and you can vote from 8-5.Who was running for Ag Commissioner?Sid Miller is the Republican running for Ag Commissioner and Jim Hogan is the Democrat. In all of Sid’s commercials he has other people talk for him and he’s not even really in his own commercials. Jim Hogan was interviewed for the first time ever by a reporter from Time Warner Cable. Hogan asked the reporter if she had ever seen a goat eat a watermelon. Sid Miller won.Who was running for comptroller?Mike Collier is the Democrat running for Comptroller and in his ad he said that if the people wanted an accountant they should elect him and if they wanted a farmer they should hire GlennHegar his Republican opponent. Mike Collier won.What 2 things are good to have when running for office?If running for office it’s good to have 2 things: 1. Name recognition 2. Money Lecture 21 (October 22)Ebola and GovernorsWhat are some Ebola measures that have been put into effect?Governor Rick Perry announced 2 designated Ebola clinics in Texas. One is in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the other is in Galveston. Newark, JFK, O’Hare, Dos, Hartsville are the only places West Africans can enter the United States and they must go through extra screening.Who was Ann Richards?Ann Richards was the second female governor of Texas and she was elected in 1990. She was the last democrat to be governor in Texas and she lost in 1994 to George W. Bush.How can the governor be removed?The governor may be removed only by impeachment. Impeachment is by the House by simple majority, and the conviction is by the Senate by 2/3rds majority. Pa Ferguson was the only Texas governor who was impeached and removed from office.Who succeeds the governor?If the governor is no longer able to serve the Lt. Governor becomes governor and next in line after him is the president protempore of Senate (the person serving the longest in Senate). Lecture 22 (October 24)Governor PowersWho was running for Texas Senator?One of John Cornyn’s commercials was a remake of Jimmy Dean’s song Big John. He is running for re-election for Texas Senator. David Alameel is an independent running against him. John Cornyn won.Who was running for railroad commissioner?Ryan Sitton is the republican running for railroad commissioner and Steve Brown is the democrat. Ryan Sitton won.What are the governor’s powers?The Governor’s only power is the veto, he lacks the pocket veto power. The governor’s formal powers are the line item veto which is virtually absolute. Bureaucrats- governor may influence administration by threatening to withhold funds or veto bills supported by an agency. Bargaining-support from governor comes at a political price. Pre-session bargaining- before legislative session begins, governor, legislative leadership, concerned administrators and special interest groups try to negotiate compromises. Lecture 23 (October 27)Imminent DomainsWhat is the Texas Northeast Gateway?The Texas Northeast Gateway is a group of people who want to build a tollway through Rockwall. Now property value will go down because the houses will be right next to a tollway. What is imminent domain?The Texas Northeast Gateway is using imminent domain to force people to sell their land so they can tear it down and build their tollway. Jerry Jones did this to many people when he wanted to build the Cowboy’s Stadium. Many people only got $55,000 max when normal houses are $100,000 and up. Texas now doesn’t allow imminent domain even though tollways are still doing this to people. What are some executive tools of persuasion?The governor has clemency powers where they can postpone an execution for up to 30 days. In 1936 the Board of Pardons and Paroles was created, absorbing many of the powers once conferred on the governor. The Party Chief is also a useful channel of influence. How can you be an elected executive?To be an elected executive you must be at least 30 years old, have U.S. citizenship, and it is a 4 year term with no term limit.Who is the current Attorney General?The current Attorney General is Greg Abbott; he will win the Governor’s race. The attorney general collects child support and investigates Medicaid fraud.Who is the current comptroller?The current Comptroller is Susan Combs. She is resigning because she guessed a budget that was a couple million dollars off. The comptroller is the chief tax collector and tells the legislaturehow much money they have to spend. He is also in charge of the Alamo. Phil Collins is the British pop star that donated more things from the Alamo than anyone else.Who is the current Land Commissioner?The Commissioner General Land Office makes sure the state gets money off of state land. Jerry Patterson is the current Land Commissioner.Who is the current Ag Commissioner?The Ag Commissioner deals with agriculture and gas pumps.
