variety of ways childhood is experienced in cultures around the world It helps students without a background in anthropology to develop an appreciation for the nature of culture the nature of childhood and the pivotal role of childhood for maintaining cultural continuity and influencing cultural evolution It includes a discussion of the universal biology shared by all children and the evolutionary origins of human uniqueness Examination of the scientific evidence for the nature of children will alternate with cinematic dramatization and discussion of relevant readings OBJECTIVES 1 Distinguish lifespan changes in humans with a focus on traits that distinguish children and juveniles from other life stages 2 Define biological evolution and provide examples of human traits which demonstrate our shared status as mammals primates and hominoids Know the important traits that distinguish humans from all other species 3 Present a definition of culture and explain how culture in humans can be distinguished from group acquired traditional behavior in other species 4 Explain how children function as agents of cultural continuity and cultural change Explain how features of middle childhood make these individuals especially good at cultural acquisition 5 Present examples of cultural differences in the behavior expected of and exhibited by children in diverse cultural environments Present examples of cultural differences in parenting caretaking behavior 6 Present examples of the dangers posed by the global exploitation of children and the need to nurture children ON CANVAS This is a web assisted class All PowerPoints will be posted on Canvas as soon as possible after the class meeting it accompanies Each posted PowerPoint accurately reflects the exact material presented on that day Although PowerPoints are not a substitute for good class notes they do provide important visual enhancement and can be used to amplify or correct your notes Reviewing both personal notes and PowerPoints on a daily basis will enhance your understanding and long term memory of material presented in class It will also remind you to ask questions about something that is not clear at the next class meeting Also note that the first slide of every PowerPoint contains important announcements and assignment updates i CLICKER ANT 2000 will use FSU s preferred classroom management system called i Clicker This requires each student to purchase the iClicker phone app register it and be ready to use it by Thurs Sept 4 2025 The i Clicker app is available from the FSU Bookstore as well as from online sources From Sept 2 forward every lecture day will include an opportunity to earn Attendance and Participation points using i Clicker to answer two or more questions
