Office SM 266 Phone 570 8610 evenings Email pickettd tcc fl edu An introductory course in geology emphasizing environmental aspects of the earth including earthquakes volcanoes depletion of resources water supply problems pollution geologic land use and planning Satisfactory completion of ENC 0020 or appropriate placement score required 3 hours Learning Outcomes Learning outcome 1 Students will utilize evidence and scientific argumentation to examine contemporary issues affecting the quality of the natural environment Learning outcome 2 Students will apply their learning of the earth s geological processes to describe reasons for the occurrence of higher and lower risk areas on earth Learning outcome 3 Students will apply their understandings of natural processes e g carbon cycle nitrogen cycle sedimentary processes biomagnification to explore the impact of human activities on the environment e g air pollution water pollution sediment deposition Learning outcome 4 Students will evaluate a variety of energy water and mineral resources and the challenges and tradeoffs involved with each of these Textbook Montgomery Carla W 2011 Environmental Geology 9th edition McGraw Hill Required reference copies available for use in the Learning Commons Grading Procedure Attendance Homework Environmental Group Project Exams best 2 of 3 Final Exam Total 10 10 5 50 25 each 25 100 For all exams assignments and for final grades the scale is A 90 100 B 80 89 C 70 79 D 60 69 F below 60 Attendance Attendance is critical for this class students who attend class regularly earn higher grades than students who miss class or arrive late Unexcused late arrivals and early departures are considered an absence If you know you will miss a class you must provide written justification or an email for me to evaluate if it will be excused If you wish to withdraw from the course please follow the appropriate procedure I will not withdraw students from the class for any reason November 4 is the last day to withdraw from a course Also please turn off beepers cell phones during class Student Email All class communication will be through TCC email This includes comments on attendance exams dates assignments grades etc All students MUST activate their TCC email accounts only TCC email accounts may be used If you have not activated your TCC email account please go to the TCC homepage and follow the instructions posted there Please note your TCC email can be forwarded to any other email account Also please make sure to check your TCC email account regularly KEYS TO SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS The best way to be successful in this class is to read your textbook turn in all homework on time come to every class and take part in classroom discussions Because a big part of your grade is the homework and the Final Exam is NOT cumulative you must keep up with the homework and not get behind or you will not be able to make up for it later in the semester Read the text ahead of time before topics are covered in lecture The textbook provides the basic information the classroom relates the information to the world around us and the homework helps focus on the important information for the test Some test questions come directly from the book some come from practical information covered only in class and I give some of the test questions out in class If you need extra help be sure to make use of the Learning Commons or my office hours or email me Homework Assignments There will be homework assignments due before almost every class worth a total of 10 of your grade A list of due dates for homework and the actual homework assignments can be found as documents in Blackboard Exams The first 3 exams will include all material covered since the previous exam The final exam is NOT cumulative and will cover all material since the previous exam The exams will consist of multiple choice and essay You must be on time for all of the exams If you come in after someone has already completed taking the exam you will not be permitted to take the exam There are no make ups for missed exams Any conflict with the Final Exam schedule should be discussed with the Dean of the
