Reading response on “Of Property” From: The Second Treatise of Civil Government by John LockeQ: Why are children not born into equality? A: According to an analysis done by LitCharts, we are born without knowledge and understanding, and it is our parents’ job to nourish and educate us until we reach the age of reason. A parent’s power is rooted in the duty to teach and advise us until we become free. This is what I understand and conclude from the reading: Locke discusses how God provided for all of mankind to have property. We are born as equals, and no one has dominion over another, so the fruit of the Earth is made to be enjoyed by all. He says that the work that is done by a man is his own and he alone should reap from it, it is the labor done that legitimates his possession. Through labor men gets private possessions. Because of this men could only possess as much property as was physically possible. But then money was invented, and eventually communities turned into states and kingdoms who created laws and started regulating their lands and negotiated their boundaries with other states, communities, and kingdoms. Mankind’s voluntary consent to these laws and boundaries created the inequality of possessions. In conclusion Locke thinks that before government and money, labor created value, that men only took what they needed and that conflict over land did not exist.Of paternal power conclusion: In short, Locke talks about the power parents haveover their children and that it is assumed that the father has all the power. He thinks that a mother has equal claim and that it should rather be called parental power. He says that everyone is born into equality, but it does not apply to children until a certain age.I agree with Locke, because I think money gives the illusion of power and often makes people greedy, resulting in them taking more than they might need, causing precious resources to go to waste. I agree with the second part as well but think a mother should have more power than the father as she was the one who nourished the child and brought them into this
