Reading response on “from: The Politics” by AristotleQ: Should access to riches be limited?A: People argue that everyone should be free, that limiting wealth will infringe on the peace of those who worked for their money, and that the rich provide work for the poor. They say that alternative methods should be implemented, like taxing rich people fairly or ensuring that money is not a birth right. (SALVE international, 2018)This is what I understand and conclude from the reading: Aristotle says that there are three types of relationships that forms a household: (1) husband-wife (2) parent-child (3) master-slave, and as a fourth element he identifies the “art of acquisition”. The first type being the natural art of acquisition which is practised by the head of the household and statesmen, andthe second being the art of making money. He argues that our possessions have two uses, proper and improper. Proper being the primary use of a product/possession and improper the secondary use. He also says that retail is not a natural part of the art of making-money, that if it was, people would stop trading when they had enough. He further argues that coin isnot natural wealth nor a natural art of making money, but that wealth in its true form forms part of the management of the household – natural wealth is part of household managementand unnatural money-making is retail trade. Men want to maximize their wealth without limits, and because of this they are more focussed on only living, and not living well.Based on the world we live in today I do not agree with Aristotle when he says that a father has a royal power (has more power than the mother) - even though that was the case in the time period he lived in. Today we see more single mothers or women that are the breadwinners of the household, therefore being the head of the household.Sources:
