Reading response on Of the Sin of Usury From the Summa Theologica by Aquinas Q What is meant by usury A The illegal action or practice of lending money at unreasonably high rates and interests This is what I understand and conclude from the reading Aquinas is against the idea of lending money at interest for many reasons Aquinas doesn t see any morality in buying or selling something for more or less than it is wroth He believes that it is right to exchange money for things like necessities but not money for money because this creates greed From the objectives listed in article 1 we can conclude that taking usury is not unlawful but this is being contradicted by the Bible In article 2 we can once again conclude from the objectives listed that it is lawful to ask for consideration but it is contradicted by the argument that anything that can be given a monetary value can be seen as money and as it is an injustice to take money in return for lending money it would be against justice to accept something with monetary value In article 3 from the listed objectives we can see that man is bound to restore the profits he made from usury but it is contradicted by the argument that if a good s use is consumption then you should not be able to restore more than you received In article 4 from the listed objectives we can conclude that it is seen as sin and unlawful to borrow money under the conditions of usury further he argues that the person who accepts the loan under a condition of usury is not a sinner I do not agree with Aquinas because today things work much differently and we are able to lend money fairly without being exploited Sources https www studymode com essays Thomas Aquinas And Usury 48625413 html
