Course Overview and Objectives: This is a student centered interactive online computer based course. This course gives each student the opportunity to study and replay the actual audio-visual classroom lectures. This provides each student with the necessary word part and compound term memorization, repetition, and reinforcement to assure mastery of this unique language. By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Use the on-line medical terminology program to develop Medical & English language skills 2. Spell and define prefixes, suffixes, and stem words for selected medical words 3. Identify and explain the function of specific word parts 4. Describe how medical compound terms (words) are constructed 5. Build medical compound terms using multiple word parts in a combining form 6. Fracture and analyze key compound medical terms found on the Word Part Flashcards, Multiple Choice Questions, and Lecture Slides 7. Define key compound medical terms found on the flashcards, both literally and actually 8. Spell and define medical equipment, treatment, disease, and diagnostic compound terms 9. Identify visually and describe verbally some of the medical problems, disorders, and diseases presented in the lectures Prerequisites: NoneCourse Materials: The course is based upon a customized version of the textbook Medical Language: Immerse Yourself by Susan Turley from Pearson Publishing (ISBN 1323013911). It is not necessary for you to purchase a hard-copy of the textbook but you must purchase the access code to Pearson’s MyMedicalTerminologyLab. An e-copy of the textbook is included in the price of the access code. Two options are available to you to purchase the access code: 1. a hard copy of the text that includes an access code can be purchased in the university bookstore for $93.35. 2. access code only that can be purchased directly from Pearson for $85.00. The link to Pearson’s website will be embedded within the course on e-Campus. You may also get temporary access for 15 days to the Pearson website if you are waiting on financial aid or the bookstore’s package is delayed. On the fifteenth day, you will be prompted to enter your access code or purchase an access code to continue the course. You will not lose any work but be sure to use the same username and password. The course can be accessed through the Howdy portal. Once you log on to Howdy, click on the eCampus icon that is at the top-right corner of the webpage. Once you are in eCampus click on the link for the course. Required Software: - Internet Browser o Google Chrome is recommended for the course management system - Flash Plug-in - NEO Email Account o ALL course emails will be sent to your NEO/TAMU account - Adobe Reader Technical Support: See the information below if you experience any technical problems with Pearson’s MyMedicalTerminologyLab: - Phone - 877-864-8847 (This is an unlisted number that gives you 24/7 priority access to tech support) - Email - [email protected] - Useful Links - Most of your technical issues will revolve around your browser. Using Google Chrome will minimize those problems. The following is a link to provides helpful information about configuring your browser for MyMedicalTerminologyLab: http://247pearsoned.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7557Course Grades: Your grades are composed of the following: - 20 Assignment Activities worth 200 points (10 points each) - 2 Quizzes worth 20 points (10 points each) - Exam 1 worth 50 Points - Exam 2 worth 50 points No assignments will be accepted late and no extensions for quizzes will be given unless you have a university excuse. If you have a university excuse, you will have 1 business day from the date of your excuse to complete any missed assignments or exams. - Assignment Activities: These assignments are designed to help assess mastery of chapter materials. They may contain activities/games such as Labelling, Word surgery, and/or Matching. In order to access these assignments for each chapter, you must watch the guided lecture for the chapter before the assignments are due. Before attempting any of the assignment activities for the first time, it is highly recommended you view the tutorial titled “how to play each Medical Terminology Game” under “How to Succeed in MyMedicalTerminologyLab” tab. - Quizzes: The quizzes are multiple choice questions designed to help assess your mastery of the chapter materials and expose you to the type of questions you may expect to see on the exams. o Quiz 1 cover the material from chapters 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7, while Quiz 2 cover material from chapter 8 – 13. Each quiz is composed of randomly selected questions from the chapters it covers. The quizzes have 10 questions and a three-minute time limit. o Quiz Rules:  The quizzes will be accessible once you have completed the necessary guided lectures (for quiz 1: chapter1, 3, 4, 5, 7; Quiz 2: chapter 8 -13) and you may take the quizzes any time before their due dates. The quizzes will be open book and you may use any material to help you answer the questions but you may not use another person to help you with them. You are expected to follow the “Aggie Code of Honor.” A time limit will be placed on the quizzes so once you start a computer tracks the time. When a quiz is not taken prior to its scheduled closing dates, a grade of “0” will be given.  Once you click on the link you will be redirected to the quiz, please read the directions and begin the quiz when you are ready. You only have 1 attempt to complete each quiz. Once you complete each quiz, you will see your quiz
