CLASS 10 EXAM REVIEW Exam One The exam will consist of 50 questions worth 2 points each on a series of 14 or 15 slides You will have 30 minutes for this which should be plenty of time if you have prepared Since this is essentially an open book test you may be tempted not to study but instead to rely on you notes However it will be very difficult for you to find all of the information you will need in 30 minutes without studying in advance After the multiple choice portion of your exam you will have 20 minutes to answer and submit ONE of the Extra Credit questions These Extra Credit questions are listed at the end of the Slide List I have listed 4 questions and will choose 3 for the Extra Credit section This means that you should prepare 2 question to be safe Extra Credit is optional not required Your Extra Credit grade will be added to your exam grade If for example you get a 98 on the exam and 3 points on the Extra Credit you will receive 101 points as the complete grade All Exam grades are recorded as numerical grades and then converted to a letter grade for the final course grade Results for the Exam should be available immediately and Extra Credit grades should be posted within 7 days STUDY TIPS FOR EXAMS slide list for Exam 1 is posted on eCampus Pay attention to WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN HOW and WHY WHO artist s name and maybe something about artist s life history if I discussed it in lecture WHAT title of specific work and its content you do not need to know the dimensions but you should have some idea whether it is very large or very small WHERE was it made in Florence Rome Flanders How does the style reflect the trends of that city Also if a work is part of a larger building that I have discussed you should know that e g Perugino s Christ Giving the Keys of the City to Peter is in the Sistine Chapel in Rome or Donatello s David was in the Medici Palazzo WHEN for dates you only need to know the century and you should also know the name of the period Gothic early Renaissance High Renaissance etc HOW how was it made e g fresco tempera intaglio printing etc Also know the qualities of each of these media tempera is matte and dries quickly e g WHY why is it important why do people study it and or care about it What is special about this work Exam Material Overview Gothic and Byzantine 12th 13th c artists closely follow tradition looking at previous works of art which are generally stiff flat and stylized Gothic Cathedrals are complex works pioneering many technical advances also very ornate and organic Early Renaissance late 13 th 14th c artists attempting to depict optical effects looking at the world around them rather than at past works of art Middle Renaissance 15th c artists beginning to work through techniques for bring them to new heights this chronology holds true for both the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance but keep in mind that the Northern Renaissance often preserves more Gothic qualities Mannerism late 16th c overlaps with High Renaissance having mastered the techniques of naturalism and illusionism many artists turn away from them to create works that are visually illogical in many
