NTR 301 1st edition Lecture 4 Outline of Last Lecture I Levels of intake Outline of Current Lecture I DRIs A What are they and what do they consist of B Why they were created C How have they changed Current Lecture In the last section the levels of intake used the word optimal Optimal refers to the Dietary Reference Intakes DRI This will tell an individual if they are consuming too much or too little as an estimate DRIs What do they consist of 1 Gives suggestions for intake of vitamins minerals protein as both a micronutrient and a macronutrient fiber fat and carbohydrate The micronutrients are displayed in amounts of g mg and microgram The macronutrients are displayed as percents of overall calorie intake 2 Tolerable Upper Levels of Intake ULs Some minerals and vitamins have this type of DRI Why were DRIs created to prevent deficiency diseases The first set of DRIs were created around the time of WW2 These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute There were limited nutrients displayed and only some had amounts for all of the age and gender groups How have they changed As deficiency diseases are no longer a major problem in the US and chronic diseases have risen more attention has been put on what levels will lower the risk of getting chronic diseases such as heart disease The relationship between chronic disease and specific nutrients are harder to conclude for reasons such as Chronic diseases happen over time and are harder to pinpoint one cause This is not a direct relationship These are the changes 1 DRIs added values for Fat Carbohydrates and Fiber this was not included in the original With the exception of protein macronutrients were not included on the original DRI chart 2 More micronutrients were added 3 New age groups were also added Why was it believed that as age increased nutrient requirements decreased Less activity Some nutrient requirements will increase with age because of less absorption and the body using the nutrients in different ways
