NTR 301 1st edition Lecture 7 Outline of Last Lecture I The DRIs for Fat Carbohydrate and Protein A Why were they developed B How are they expressed C Why are there two different DRIs for protein and which is more important II Percentages Outline of Current Lecture I Daily Values II Dietary Guidelines Current Lecture Daily Values Daily values were developed from DRIs Do not confuse the two as the same thing Daily values give the public a reference point for the percentage of calories coming from each category For example carbohydrates are supposed to comprise 60 of total calorie intake of a 2000 calorie diet 300 grams is the daily value for carbohydrates This would help convey to the public how much the gram amounts are in terms of a lot or a little Total fat s set percentage of total calories is 30 the daily value is 65 grams Saturated fat has a set percentage of total calories at 10 the daily value is 20 grams Carbohydrates and fats have set percentages because there was a varying range of DRIs Also they have DRIs shown as a percent of all the calories in a day Thus the 2000 calorie diet was set as the average caloric intake Remember these were set as averages and are not specific to every individual DRIs and Daily values are specific to nutrient guidelines Percent of Daily Value is determined by example Gram amount of carbohydrates in 1 serving Daily value of carbohydrates These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute People typically find the nutrition facts as unhelpful because they do not understand percentages A visual display could help with this Dietary Guidelines Knowing how much of which foods is also important to meet other needs not described in nutrition facts To help the public have healthier diets the USDA created the Dietary Guidelines MyPlate was created to help the public understand how much of their plate should have each food group It is supposed to clarify and give more nutritional information Different lifestyles and views mean that no one amount will be the same for everyone again the MyPlate is also an average Benefits Shows approximate amounts of foods by size Shows that half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables Limits Protein is not a food group but a macronutrient Doesn t include snacks Dairy looks like it is saying all dairy should come from milk which is not true
