There will be no makeup tests. If a major test is missed, the student must contact the professor within 24 hours of the test missed, giving the reason for not taking the test. If the excuse is accepted, the grade on the final exam will replace the exam missed. It is not possible to do extra credit in the course. Notes: 1. The teacher may make changes in the syllabus with advance notice to the students. 2. Please, do not bring family members or guests to class. 3. All cellular telephones, pagers and other electronic devices must be turned off during class time. 4. All assignments are due at the beginning of class, on the dates assigned. No credit will be given if work is turned in late. Assignments must be typed.Attendance: Attendance is required. To be counted present, the student must be on time and must remain in class for the entire class period. A total of three absences (excused and/or unexcused) will be allowed. For each absence in excess of three, one point for each day missed will be deducted from the student’s final average. Students are responsible for all announcements, including changes to the syllabus and assignments made in class, even if they are absent. Students who are absent, are not, by virtue of their absence, absolved of the responsibility to complete assignments made when they were not present. Learners demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the target language, and they seek opportunities to strengthen their proficiency. (Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes) To address this outcome, learners will  Read plays, poems, and critical essays. Upon completion of SPAN 4434, learners are expected to be able to move beyond literal comprehension, infer the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases in new contexts, infer and interpret the author’s intent, and offer a personal interpretation of text.  Write a critical essay in Spanish . Upon completion of SPAN 4434, learners are expected to have achieved an Advanced-Low level in writing on the ACTFL scale.  Discuss literary techniques and cultural issues related to the works studied as well as critical essays. Upon completion of SPAN 4434, learners are expected to have achieved an Advanced-Low level in interpersonal speaking on the ACTFL scale.  Deliver an oral presentation extemporaneously, without reading notes, participate in class discussions. 1 By the end of this course, students are expected to reach the Advanced-low level of proficiency according to the ACTFL scale (see www.actfl.org ).Upon completion of SPAN 4434, learners are expected to speak in connected discourse using a variety of time frames and vocabulary appropriate to the topic. Use of extra-linguistic support to facilitate audience comprehension (e.g., visuals) is required. Assessment: written essays, presentations in class GSLO ML&C 2: CULTURES & LITERATURES Learners know the literature and culture of the target language countries. They use this knowledge to interpret and reflect upon the perspectives of the target culture in relation to its practices and products. (Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes) SSLO ML&C 2.a.: Demonstrating Cultural Understandings. Learners demonstrate that they understand the connections among the perspectives of a culture and its practices and products. (Knowledge, Skills) To address this outcome, learners will  Read plays, poems, and critical essays as well as analyze and discuss the works read within their cultural context. Assessment: Presentations, critical essays SSLO ML&C 2.b.: Demonstrating Understanding of Literary and Cultural Texts and Traditions.
