SPAN 4434 Topics in Language, Literature, and Cultura: La cultura popular en la narrativa latinoamericana: Esquivel, González Viaña y Puig,. 3-0-3. Prerequisites: SPAN 3304 or SPAN 3305 III. Course Description: An analysis of the uses of Popular Culture in Latin American Fiction form 1960 to 2000. IV. Course Objectives: • Study concepts of culture, pop culture, and popular culture as use in Latin America • Examine how cultural representations and products are portrayed in the novels of Laura Esquivel, Eduardo González Viaña y Manuel Puig,. V. Academic Honesty Statement: Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct, as published in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Section ii of the Student Code of Conduct addresses the University’s policy on academic honesty, including provisions regarding plagiarism and cheating, unauthorized access to University materials, misrepresentation/falsification of university records or academic work, malicious removal, retention, or destruction of library materials, malicious/intentional misuse of computer facilities and/or services, and misuse of student identification cards. Incidents of alleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures of the University Judiciary Program, which includes either an “informal” resolution by a faculty member, resulting in grade adjustment, or a formal hearing procedure, which may subject a student to the Code of Conduct’s minimum one semester suspension requirement. VI. Disability Policy Kennesaw State University provides program accessibility and reasonable accommodations for persons identified as disabled under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. A number of services are available to help disabled students with their academic work. In order to make arrangements for special services, students must visit the Office of Disabled Student Support Services (ext. 6443) and arrange an individual assistance plan. In some cases, certification of disability is required. VII. Attendance and Participation Policy It is mandatory to attend to all presentations. Failure to attend to any of the presentations will lower your final grade by one letter grade. Please make necessary work/ personal arrangements in order to be present.Readind diaries and essay are to be written only by the student. Receiving help from other people is considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Allowed and encouraged are the use of dictionaries (except during an exam), spell check programs, or any writing assistance programs available in the FLRC. However, the use of translation software is prohibited Class time will be used to emphasize development of speaking skills with the support of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing exercises. You are expected to study and practice at home as part of your daily preparation. All assignments are to be finished by the time class begins. No late homework will be accepted. Emergencies will be handled on an individual basis. No make-up tests, class activities or assignments will be given. A grade of zero (“0”) will be assigned for all work not turned in or any tests not taken. There will be no “extra credit.” Emergencies will be handled on an individual basis. All assignments are designed to support student’s preparation for class participation; therefore, the instructor does not accept assignments via e-mail. VIII.
