Psych lecture“Ted”--> employed as executive in financial company•referred to physicians from Baystate Medical•married 45 yrs old; father of newborn baby•gradual weakness of arms--> turned into paralysis•sent to neurologist--> nerves that control arms are in tact, turns out it seems to be psychological disease•doesn’t make sense neurologically, must be psychlogical•when Ted meets with Halgin he(Halgin) expects Ted to be defensive, irriated, annoyed, belligerant•combative relationship with bosses--> long lunch breaks, but can’t fire him b/c hisnumbers for campany are better than anyone•Ted: “they (physicians) don’t know what they are doing. They can’t even figure outthis simple problem. This sucks. I can’t even get dressed.”•conversion symptom: converts emotional conflict into bodily dysfunction/symptomsuch as stomach ache, head ache, nausea, etcPsychodynamic Perspective-->Freud•Freud: Psychodynamics--must of behavior is due to unconscious feelings/thoughts •3 components (id, ego, superego)•Anton Mesmer-->certain medical conditions we don’t know cause of are due to magnetic forces in environment/universe. Ex: if you had sickness, he would wave magnetic wands around body to offset sicknesshysteria: conditions/symptoms that can’t be understood, form of maladaptive response to stress-->mostly in women•glove anesthesia: unable to move/feel handsPsychodynamic Perspective•id: pleasure and aggression (sex and urge to fight)•ego: works on reality principle (good judgement, calm down id)•superego: morality principleDevelopment of disorders•Defense mechanisms: defend yourself with unconscious thoughts, regression, repression (forgot to do something obvious)•psychosexual stages:•1st stage: oral•2nd stage: anal•3rd: phalic-->genitals become center of attention•4th: genitaleveryone has a secret, and often times that secret causes conflictHalgin asks Ted what his secret is...and Ted answers by saying “I dress in women’s clothing”•been doing it since 12 yrs old•on lunch break, go home and dress as woman-->found it very soothing•sometimes go into work with women’s panties or bra as feeling of serenityVideo about JOyce•found neighbor doing nasty things with Melissa (never found out who melissa was)•called police and she was told she would have to go to court to identify the man•later that day was watching TV and lost vision•called husband and went to ER•no previous illness or problem with eyes•given “magic medicine” (placebo) and a few seconds later, vision came backTed (cont)•family history: mother psychologically disturbed and always wanted a girl and dressed Ted in girls clothes, grew hair, and bandaged penis and said “I don’t want you to look at that.”; father was absent and passive. This left Ted in the phalic stage•reaches age of sexual arousal and becomes more comfortable and soothed in womens clothes rather than erect penis•paralysis implies he can’t hold baby daughter•Halgin has number of choices to make1. Accept condition and explain you are not bizarre -do you want to change behavior?
